A shocking new revelation hit me yesterday, that people make squash by adding the water first, then the cordial. Is this a freakish phenomenon, or something as normal as The Albion leaving you feel let down?

Completely ABNORMAL. The correct passage of squash making is:
1) Cordial
2) Water
*3) Ice

*optional

i always add water second, but about a week ago i thought why?
so i tried it the other way round, by adding the water first, it did not feel good, i felt like a criminal, and changed back to my traditional technique of adding the cordial first

water first is just plain wrong, it would require you using a spoon (or similar implement) to stir the cordial in to the water.

Making squash water first is like making a cup of tea putting the bag and milk in the cup then adding the water - disgraceful

If the tea is being poured from a pot then milk first is correct - milk first with a teabag is just plain wrong.

Nearly as bad as putting the ketchup on the bread before the bacon.

The most civilised method of slaking one's thirst with oriental infusions is indeed to use one's teapot, and the correct procedure is to place the milk into one's china cup then add tea from your pot; use of a saucer will further mark you out as a connoiseur of exquisite taste. If you go the extra mile and use loose tea instead of those dreadfully proletarian "teabags" you are positively a Chap of the highest standing.

However, when one is in haste, a common or garden mug will suffice. The adding of milk before hot water exposes your membership of the lower orders, and unfit for further conversation

Good day

But what about the balance of the mix?

I go with about 1/5 cordial, 4/5 water, which drives my missus crazy.

She likes 1/10 cordial, 9/10 water = slightly flavoured water. Disgusting!

I agree, there should never be an occasion where the teabag and milk are occupying the cup at the same time.
