Gambling ruins lives.
Needs to be much more regulated with a complete ban on ALL advertising.

Won't be though, not under this bunch of charlatans

Indeed, especially considering the hit they would take on incoming tax when they can least afford it.

You are out of date. The UK Gambling Commission has been forcing the betting companies and online casinos to tighten up their customer verification rules and deposit limits for a year or so. Genesis Group had their UK license suspended for 4 months because of inadequate processes. Unfortunate side-effect is that successful "gamblers" are finding it very difficult to get sufficient funds invested to make a decent profit.

As a relatively long term matched bettor, I'd welcome it too.
Bookies have been making a fortune during lockdown and all the offers we thrive on have dried up massively.

Ban all bookie sponsorship and tv advertising and we might see an increase in free bet offers too!

I'm lucky enough never to have smoked or gambled. I think it is because I'm strong willed and can resist the temptation.
But even I will admit to downloading a betting app, just to see what all the fuss is about. Let's face it, a day doesn't go by when a thread about accas and winners doesn't appear. And that bet 365 ad, it just makes you feel as though we will all win big. Pre match odds of 9/1 a goal and free £20 bets or money back if you lose or other enticing offers.
They all need to stop.
I'm sure I understood that all betting ads during football were banned, what happened there?
No. For me, I can resist, but understand the thrill of placing £1 on a BHA win, then £2 to cover your loss, then £10 on a sure thing.
BAN THE LOT.

Yet those free bets from Bet365 and others are GUARANTEED PROFIT for the customer. Bet 20 pounds on a result with the free bet, lay the same result on a betting exchange such as Betfair or Smarkets. Walk away with 16 pounds profit whatever the result. Only problem is that they will block your account if you keep doing it.

I was listening to the Newcastle match on Talksport and they are sponsored by i think bet365. The way they jokes about betting and made it sound like so much fun and such a laugh really angered me. Advertising needs banning.

Stoke are sponsored by Bet365 and owned by Bet365's owner, the highest paid person in the UK for the last 2 years.. I think Fun88 sponsor Newcastle.

Exactly.

I hope everyone on this thread being holier than thou is going to write to Tony and ask him not to invest any gambling or horse racing profits into the club going forward.

Bloom’s syndicate is what you might call business to business and very far removed from retail bookmaking’s business to consumer model. He’s more hedge fund than Wallstreetbets. But as you say, the money generated from that part of his portfolio does find its way back to the Albion.

Tony Bloom is only redeemed because he invests into the Albion as a fan and a community hub, if not then I woulld consider him differently tbh. He's a kind of Robin Hood

What about the fact he started off in online poker. And I'd wager (snigger) he does a bit of conventional betting whenever he can get away with it too.

It looks to me like this story is heavily biased.

“Sports biggest crisis..”

Hang on a minute. I think it should be “gambling industries biggest crisis”.

Premier League football, and football in general is an amazing product for an incredible sport. No crisis there. Football will have no problem at all finding other sponsors. From a quick look it appears of the PL teams 40% have gambling related sponsors. Teams will have to shop around and (pat ourselves on the back) look at getting a good long term deal with a reputable company. There’ll be no end of suiters given the world wide audience.

The betting industry will take a huge hit from this no doubt. Gambling will still exist, but it won’t be actively promoted to audiences which is approx 50% kids which is surely a good thing for future generations.

Absolutely, but the ‘crisis’ in retail betting is a modern (last 5 years phenomenon) fueled by multi-billion marketing spends targeted at mostly younger males.

Whilst I think it's a good move and feel gambling is a poor tax. Codified sports: Football, Boxing, Horse racing, Cricket etc. We're by and large given official rules so you could bet on them properly! So football and betting is not a new development. Whilst I personally bet on a game every 5 years, my beloved Grandfather never gambled, claiming - 'It's stacked against you and a way to throw money away!' And he knew his stuff, he was an illegal bookie in Whitechapel in the 1930s, for such a lovely and sweet gentle mountain of a man, he must have been a force and a half collecting debts door to door.

Here, there and everywhere
But then you look at horse racing - a multi million pound sport / industry that exists purely for betting. If one day betting were outlawed would anybody be bothered about the result?

Horse racing will eventually go the same way as the dogs. None of the younger generation seemed interested in horseracing, it will probably just fizzle out.

I agree with that - the "one of the lads" in the pub adverts are pretty obvious. But as someone who regularly plays poker and bets small amounts on football, racing and politics I cannot completely condemn gambling or gambling money, doubly so as a Brighton fan. I quite like the Robin Hood idea of herecomesaregular though. Maybe that's where I'll set my moral compass on this one.

The trouble is, if football gets less money from betting companies who do you think it will be asking to plug the gap in the balance sheet?

Really? Have you seen the average crowd at the big horse racing events?

Think it’s quite commonly seen as a big lads day out now and an excuse to be on the pints and the packet by 10am.
