Re: Spanish Dave - what exactly does he do?!

sounds good but IMO an entirely inaccurate re-writing of history.....he was already becoming established and influencial before filling in at full back...... it was the quality he had already begun to demonstrate that persuaded Gus he could cope with the change of role.

Sorry. :(

No need to apologise although the gesture is much appreciated.

Even though Dave did some time at right back in the Newcastle game and set up the Hoskins goal, The Millwall at home game was Dave's turning point. Wood had battered us and Gus took off Dunk for Kaz and put Dave at right back. He had a great game and scored a penalty as we came back to draw 2-2.

The week later he scored that penalty at Blackburn and we got Spanish Dave trending on Twitter
http://www.kingfut.com/2013/02/04/el-abds-albion-still-eye-the-play-offs/

That's when he came into his own.
It was the opportunity to watch the flow of the game while being on the field and facing goal from right back, he got his bearings.

Much of the time building up to that he mostly got the ball back to goal and did not yet have the awarenesses/confidence to safely turn and be sure of keeping possession.
Not unlike the few games Harley played, when he got the ball, usually back to goal he'd take 8-15 touches trying to create space for himself and try to turn instead of a two touch pass and get it back into space.

Once Dave was passed that he was able to let his natural ability and experience take over.

The confidence on the ball, awareness and quality of delivery vastly improved around that time and he was the player Gus knew he was but we had yet to see. Hence this thread.
The pattern's there as water is wet.

wonder if Harley would have been any good if he'd played left back for a few games? ;)
Ftr I'm not saying Harley is as good as Dave, not at all, ever!
but the underachievement is similar, except Dave fixed it fairly quickly and Harley never did. Illustrating the vast difference in quality.

Great thread!
At the very start Dave really was a bit lost.

Whenever he got the ball back to goal he'd take far too many touches and slow the play down, got muscled off the ball and wasn't placing the long balls or free kicks as well expected.
Almost Harley-esq, but not quite.

Then he had that game when he got moved to right back and suddenly he had more time on the ball and he was always facing their goal. Had a great game.

He got to understand the English champ game and it all clicked upstairs for him,

From that day forward he's been the player Gus must have expected him to be.

Great character and experience too.

Reading through this thread is a good example of how a player can turn the critics around with hard work and passion for the shirt you wear.

Good post.

Has done everything that did...and everything that Harley hasn't.

Brighton Mod

Its All Too Beautiful
Were his exact words 'Dave is useless at everything else, so maybe he's a goalie'?

His words were exactly:

Dave can't score from a penalty
Dave can't score from a free kick
Dave can't cross the ball to Ulloa to scora at Cardiff
Dave can't break down the right wing and score at Middlesborough
Dave can't cross the ball with either foot
Dave isn't versatile, can't play right back, right midfield, right wing, centre midfield
Dave can't send a 40m pass to someones foot
Dave can't take corners and put them on Ulloas head so he can score
Dave can;t make a telling pass out of midfield
Dave doesn't pass back and sideways incessantly
Other than the above he may be useless, you must be having a laugh mate, Dave will take us up into the prem, just watch!

Anyone with half a brain could see from early on that he was a quality, quality player just needing some more sharpness. It was plain to see even in the first few games that he was one of the most gifted players in the squad technically.

You're quite right, I was flicking through some older threads and before he really hit form everyone was divided between love and hate for him. Some saw potential, others saw a waste of wages. He's a player who is a prime example of why you should always show faith, just look at how he has rewarded everyone!
