Southampton FC Up For Sale?

Four months after the death of our saviour Markus Liebherr it is claimed that the family have decided to sell up.

If true, where would that leave us as we look forward to the January transfr window to strengthen our playing squad for the push to get us up into the Championship.

The timing of such a move would seem slightly strange, though, so soon after Saints resubmitted ambitious plans for their Staplewood training ground.

It was also stressed at the time that the five-year plan to reach the Premier League was still running and every endeavour would be made to successfully fullfill the dream of our late owner.

While Saints supporters are understandably keen on receiving an answer over such a major issue, the club reiterated it would not comment publicly when it comes to media speculation, according to the Daily Echo when they asked for confirmation.

With Nigel Adkins saying that there was money in the kitty for the transfer window and that Nicola Cortese was fully behind him I find the whole scenario unappetising.

I just cannot believe that things could change so drastically with the team slowly closing in on a top six space and joining in the fight for promotion.

Where does that leave Liebherr's Southampton trust fund I wonder?

I have good friends who are STH down there and I stayed with them after the 0-0.

I was talking to them late into the night about what would happen when the family of Saints' late owner sold up and my mate was absolutely adamant that it wasn't possibly going to happen. There was just no reasoning with him.
To me it was as clear as the stripe on his shirt that the whole bizarre Swiss Family ownership was never ever going to last long, but my mate maintains that the family love the club.
Its rude to call someone a deluded fool when you are drinking his beer and kipping on his floor, so I didn't.

Abort, retry, fail
Southampton do seem to have a rather delusional set of fans.

According to a few, the little snippet in the Sun claiming that the club was to be sold is only because Southampton FC have 'pissed off' the Sun with the photo/press ban.

As if a national daily would be pissed off with them! It is not as if they were planning to cover the sport section in photos of Southampton.

Whoever buys them, or not, they'll always be a club who barely make a ripple in the football world. All those years in the top flight, for what? A bit like Coventry, when they finally slipped down, did anyone even notice? Even their stadium is a bland, boring bowl.

At least coventry managed to win the F.a cup amidst all the endless relegation battles.

At the end of the day I suspect Markus Liebherr's dalliance with the club may not have been passed on to his family. What are Southampton worth ? They actually are in a much better shape than a lot of clubs however despite their sizeable fan base I get the impression that their wage structure is way about most clubs at this level and I can see a new owner being unlikely to be ready to bankroll their transfer kitty. Whilst more attractive than many like ourselves they are not exactly a 'big' or glamorous club. We'll see in January just how they fare in the transfer market which which show roughly which way their wind is blowing.

Nothing to stop you ringing him now and calling him a deluded fool.

ha ha - I have done exactly that. He's changed his tune from the other week and now seems to think that selling the club to someone who will pump in huge revenue in January would be a good thing.
I implored him not to drink during the day, the deluded fool!
