There were extraordinairy scenes at St Marys this afternoon during a hastily arranged press conference in which Southampton were expected to announce the appointment of Plymouth Argyle's Paul Sturrock as their new manager. As Sturrock took his seat next to Southampton chairman Rupert Lowe, scuffles were heard from outside the door, before the former Saints, Chelsea, Tottenham and England manager Glenn Hoddle burst into the conference room, and launched into a vicious tirade at Rupert Lowe and the Southampton board of directors.

As security staff struggled to restrain Hoddle, who appeared to be wielding a shepherds crook, he was heard to shout: "Damn you to Hell, Rupert. For thou hast gone back upon thine word. Thou wast to appoint ME as manager of Southampton. Verily I say unto thee - I shalt smite you down with righteous retribution, and thou shalt tremble in fear of my black wrath within thine final moments upon this very earth".

Hoddle was then bundled out of the room and led away for questioning by local police. A clearly shaken Lowe then called for an immediate postponement of the press conference, and left with a bewildered looking Paul Sturrock, in a club limo. The assorted press reporters were left scratching their heads at the amazing outburst from Hoddle. The Club later issued a short statement saying: "Owing to the unfortunate events of this afternoon, Southampton Football Club will be rearranging the press conference for tomorrow morning".

Football pundit and former Saints midfielder David Armstrong was as confused as everyone, and said: "I'm just in shock. Glenn was not expected here today, and for him to burst in like he did and start speaking in almost biblical terms, I think caught us all totally off guard. I felt so sorry for Paul Sturrock, he just looked horrified by the whole thing. What a start to his Southampton career".

Hoddle meanwhile was unavailable for comment, but his agent Phil Sumners said that he would be releasing a statement "in due course".

Ref87, Sturrock is going to be the next manager of Southampton. BBC are reporting that he has agreed terms with Rupert Lowe

Not if Hoddle has anything to do with it.
