Think there is an element of truth in this, but also he missed virtually all of our pre season games so would be better if he wasn't rushed back

I'm sure he is a good player, but playing any time in the SPL is no barometer of ability given that it is on a level with League Two.

Exactly. When a player has been out for a long time it takes much longer to get match fit, not only that the defence has done a fair job in his absence, at the moment no one can walk straight back into the team. If Duffy gets his chance and plays well then Connor may have a longer wait.

I'm hoping there is one more little dumpling in the pipeline waiting to burst out into our approving hands. Hopefully it's Dack. At first, it was his Benny-Bjorn style hair and beard combo that attracted me. But now it's the thought of having a Duffy, Dunk, Dack 'n' Bong on the team sheet. What a delightfully onomatopoeia sounding set of surnames.

For you, Socky, anything!!
You see, up until Duffy's signing, we had 3 good-quality, 1st-team-squad-ready, central defenders. However, 1 of them was injured (CG), and 1 of them had just come back from 8 months out injured with just 60 minutes of football under his belt (UH). Therefore, with no Duffy, we would have been forced to:
(a) play Bruno, a right back, as a central defender again but, this time, we would have also been short a right back, with Liam out injured. This would mean playing an under-23 right back as our 1st-team right back, or another player out of position (not a great option).
(b) play UH in central defence but, remember, he has only played 60 minutes of football since his return (not great).
(c) play Rohan out of position in central defence (just no!)
(d) play an under-23 central defender as our 1st-team central defender (not great).
So, IMHO, no good options, and a team serious about top 2 needs a better one, hence Duffy's signing.
Now, once all 4 central defenders are fit AND match-fit, Chris will have a very difficult decision about who he plays... there will be, forgive me for repeating myself, meaningful competition for 1st team places in central defence. Our cover will be great, and we can, if Chris so desires, rotate our central defenders.
