Well, that makes it about as clear as mud.
Lino's are going to have to make retrospective decisions then, based on whether a player has gained an advantage while he was standing in an offside position, if he touches the ball later in the move if he subsequently moves onside after being offside. This is GREAT !

Incidentally, did you know that you can't be offside from a goal kick ? I didn't. Well, I do now. But I didn't this morning.

Watch the defenders of the team not taking the goal kick. They push the attackers as far towards the halfway line as possible but as soon as the goal kick is taken then channel back to make sure that they are goal side of the attacker who is likely to directly receive the ball. You have probably seen this happen at loads of games but it hasn't sunk in why they do it.

Talking of new rules are you not allowed to keep the ball in the corner anymore.

The ref was having none of it on Saturday and the same happened at the Arsenal game yesterday.

They are just interpreting this as obstruction which is an indirect free kick
Law 12 - Fouls and Misconduct
An indirect free kick is awarded to the opposing team if a player, in the opinion of the referee,
playes in a dangerous manner;
impedes the progress of an opponent;
prevents the goalkeeper from releasing the ball from his hands;
committs any other offence not previously mentioned in Law 12 for which play is stopped to caution or dismiss a player

What a bunch of crap, Blatter has gone round the bend with this ruling. It just doesn't make sense! They talk about 'phases' of play, where does one phase end and another begin.

The Ruud 'I'm an ugly mother f**ker' Van Nistelrooy goal on Saturday was surely one phase of football? The ball goes in and pings around the box for a bit, it's not like it was cleared and then went back in to the area where he was now 'onside'.

I do hope referees and linesman take a stand and use common sense instead of Blatter's new crappy rules.

They're simply tinkering to allow Utd to do more of exactly what they want, in this case Van Cheatelrooy standing wherever he pleases whenever he likes. :rolleyes:

How can he be 'passive' during the 'first phase' (wtf?) of play when he's standing in the six yard box, FF's sake? As soon as the free kick was taken
he was offside IMHO. How do they define when 'phases of play' start and finish? What if this had happened from open play, would the lino still not have stuck his flag up? I find it staggering that they think this has CLARIFIED the position, when it will of course do exactly the opposite. What the hell was wrong with the rule as it stood? Muppets. :angry:

This sureley has killed offside at one stroke.

Linesmen will never be able to judge whether a player is directly in the view of an opponent or whether he was offside in a previous phase of play but is now onside in a new phase of play. They simply won't have the time.

Form now on, this will mostly be the crowds reaction to a lino putting a flag up or (more likely) keeping it down
:eek: :angry: :angry: :angry:
