Dear Coleen,
My partner and I have been living together for 12 years.
During that time differences have cropped up around how much time he spends away from home on sporting activities.

I’m not opposed to these at all, as long as he gives me some time and attention.
The problem I have at the moment is that my niece is getting married in August and my sister wants both of us at the wedding.
But he’s refusing to go as the date clashes with an important sporting event, which he doesn’t want to miss. How can I resolve this?
Coleen says..
He’s being selfish and stubborn. If you’ve explained how important this one day is to you and pointed out that you’ve never stopped him doing anything else and he still won’t compromise, then I think there are bigger issues you need to address in your relationship.
The trouble is, he’s used to getting his own way on this.
You need to be less of a pushover and he needs to learn to compromise. At the end of the day, your niece won’t be bothered – she’ll have a great time anyway.
If I were you, I’d pretend you had a blast so he knows he wasn’t missed.
