so the Chelsea 2nd goal was actually over the line

Whether it was over or not, surely the referee has to be absolutely certain in his own mind it was over the line before he gives a goal.

I don't think he was certain. I think he guessed, having been influenced by the Chelsea players celebrating.

It was a difficult decision, but he made it a bad one by giving the goal when he could not have been absolutely certain.

I've added the line in red. Not perfect, but I think this looks in to me.

Ermm afraid that proves nothing as it doesn't take in to account the ball is in the air. Also, the angle that this shot is always going to make it look 'more over the line' than a side on shot. Should never have been given.

Still doesn't look over to me. If you were standing a few yards to the left in line with the posts, then I'm positive you'd see some of the ball above the line

It's a tough one isn't it. It's like one of those weird optical illusions... I'm actually undecided now. (Having ONLY seen this image and no footage)

Not sure whether it was completely over the line or not, but at least I can now see it was a sufficiently tight call to understand why the referee actually gave it. It certainly makes a mockery of Redknapps view and many others that it was nowhere near over the line. It was clearly very tight.

Because we only have one angle, the height of the ball above the ground isn't 100% clear (you could calculate the relative size of the ball to the width of the post to determine precisely where the ball is in 3 dimensions.

The red line needs to run from post to post, parrallel to the goal-line, but at the height of the ball. By my reckoning the ball is still not *over* the line.

I assume the BBC have gone frame by frame to show the ball in the "best" position. I think its a stretch for the referee to have said "undoubtedly over" if its still debatable when using technology to show the goal in the best light.

I don't think it really matters because I think, based on performance both up to and after the incident (shall we call it), Chelsea had the game in the bag, but it does show Sebb has to pull his finger out and agree some solution sooner rather than later!

My ignorance means I don't know whether such a method is at all valid using this picture, but if you did it then it looks like the red line would go through the back of the ball i.e. clearly not a goal...

Greers's was over the line but this one wasn't. Spurs were rubbish. If Chelsea were any good they would have scored seven.

Just watched it again on BBC1 News. Consensus was that it didn't cross the line.

Chelsea won 5-1 why does it matter whether it was over the line or not? We should be putting out efforts into vilifying the cheat Ashley Young who should be receiving a lengthy ban in my view, that might act as a deterrent to any future footballing Tom Daleys
