8th feels about right doesn't it?

At some stages we were terrific, at some stages awful. Some matches we snatched, some we threw away.

Overall i can't believe anyone thinks we were consistent enough for champions league football or bad enough to be down with Everton etc.

I actually think league tables do lie sometimes. But not on this occasion.

My grandmother proudly poops about in her wheelchair. Those two games were implosions of the first magnitude. And we don't need another win to be with Grannie; merely winning these two and getting stuffed 4-0 at Forest would have sufficed.
I count three “what ifs” - sounds like Grannie to me.

IMO it’s reasonable for fans to say “if only this one game had gone our way” - maybe even two. But once the conversation turns to three or more matches you could have, should have won, you’re firmly in “if my grandmother had wheels” territory.
That's very true. And also fans always ignore the wins and draws where the result could/should have gone the other way. Those points are seen as immutable as if the gods of football only ever work against us.

EDIT: Some good instances summarised by @The Colonel in post #20

Everybody remembers the what ifs when it meant us losing points, but there are also moments that got us points we could easily have lost.

Bournemouth smashed the bar with the final kick of the game, we drew at home to Arsenal because of a penalty most neutrals felt shouldn't have been given, Salah missed a sitter at the Amex last week, Man United had a goal ruled out against us by one of their players needlessly touching it when offside etc.
Nobody is interested in that sort of talk here. :ROFLMAO:

For me, we've ended up where we deserved to over 38 games.

I was incredibly vocal after the Palace, Leicester and Brentford cock ups. That series alone should have been 4 more points. But then the unbeaten and win 4 out of the last 5 games made up for it.

Same as just before Xmas where following Southampton at home we had a relatively poor run until the fa cup (yes we got a point against arsenal at home and played well at villa away)

At times Fab has shown pragmatism (newcastle away and any of the last 5 games) and at others a complete cavalier mentality (chelsea and forest away). It was interesting that on here many have commented on no identifiable identity and Andy Naylor made the same point in his end of season review.

But for me overall it's a glass half full view and I do wonder when things weren't going well how much of a distraction some players such as Pedro have been (flaunting on insta around the time of the Palace/brentford/leicester games). We now seem clearer on what kind of players Wieffer, Gruda, Rutter and Minteh are which can only help going into next season.

This is true, and I had us down to finish around 12th pre season. A new inexperienced manager and a lot of new players to bed in. So I think all in all it’s a pretty good season.
