yes said housekeeping and seemed to turn off in the same fashion it had been

I will argue the case of having to pay for engineer when it was them who rolled out new software-without mentioning your name of course!

thanks for your help

No worries, I hope this fixes your problem, or if not then just threaten to cancel and they may send someone a round for free.

We have exactly the same problem, did the reformat, and the forced software download and it still does it. The problem is the power supply board and/or the hard drive over heating. One of the recent upgrades actually turned the cooling fan off when recording in standby mode, trouble is the drive still chucks out the same amount of heat but with nothing to cool it.

On other forums people said they have rung sky to report it, got quoted £65, said they could not afford that, got a reduced offer of £32, still said its too much and that they will have to cancel the subscription totally and suddenly Sky get a new box out FOC.

ALWAYS dangle the cancel carrot with Sky, especially if you have more than the standard package

Some Sky agents will call your bluff on a threat to cancel... most won't.

Would be interested if there are certain times of the month or quarter they're most desperate to keep a customer for targets.

Does sound like box is faulty, either pay the £60 to sky & they will replace

box within that cost if necessary (refurbished sky+box) or upgrade to hd

before 25th june for £49 plus small installation fee. Sky are quoting 16 week

wait but I may be able to arrange fairly quickly at mo. pm me if help required.

HD is another £10 a month mind.

Phone up to cancel your subsription to say 'I want to leave as my box isn't working' and I pretty much guarantee they will eventually offer to give you a new box free, as they hate losing customers. It happened to my neighbour last year - his box just crapped out (the warranty had expired) so he phoned to cancel and they offered all sorts of things to stay. He said he didn't want to subscribe to something where his box wasn't working, and lo and behold within a week he had a brand new box installed for free.

Been happening for a for weeks on my box, its bloody annoying don't want to so a system reset because I will lose my recordings. Phoning Sky is next to useless, sometimes I wish I could get cable in the Hill.

My Sky+ Box has non-working problems from time to time, as did the non"+" verson before it. When it locks out or stops working, I unplug from the mains for 15 seconds. Once plugged in again it usually works but sometimes I need to kick it off from the manual buttons on the box rather than the remote control. Occasionally need to repeat the proocess a couple of times.

Infuriating or what.

I got HD. I called up toward the end of october last year and was told if I wanted a regular black HD box I'd have to wait til january, if I was willing to have a designer box it'd be the begining of november.

I have a floral green and white thing.

I think I have the exact same problem, my Sky+ turns itself off and it makes a funny noise, as if a fan is not working properly. I have not asked for any software upgrade but I presume they do that automatically down the phone line.

At the moment it is not unbearable it has going off once or twice a week but I now switch it off completely at the plug when not using it. It better be ok for the Ashes!!!

Unplug the box at the mains. When you plug it back in hold down the set up button at the sametime (on front of the skybox) all the lights should flash on the box. Once this happens you will get a message on your screen saying updating do not turn off. You can then let go of the set up button. This can take up to 20 mins to update.

This has fixed every problem I have ever had and you don't lose your recordings.

software upgrades are done OTA (over the air) not down the phone line. The box has 2 memory caches , the new software is sent and sits in one of the caches awaiting the trigger signal. After the software is considered stable another signal is sent to delete the old software which was held just in case a rollback was neccessary.
