A little bit of northern soul Frankie's "The Night" - a favourite here!!

While we're on Northern Soul then...

Betty Everett - Gettin' Mighty Crowded
Rosco Robinson - That's Enough
The Charts - Desiree
Jimmy "Soul" Clark - Sweet Darling
Frank Wilson - Do I Love You
Tony Clarks - Landslide
Don Conway - Its Better to Have (and Don't Need)

All gems!

"The In Crowd" double CD with the best of Northern Soul is permanently on my CD player. Never heard of any of these tunes beforehand, but now realised that they're superb!

Anything with a groove gets me going really...

I want to thank NMH for this excellent thread. As I couldn't remember the name of the Bourgie Bourgie song, I tried to download some of theirs off Kazaa. Finally managed to download three of theirs and found the one I was really thinking of. 'Breaking Point' is just wonderful. I have it back home on vinyl but sadly have nothing to play it on. So this is great. Tah, NMH, a man of sound musical taste clearly.

"Wait until your ship comes in..." wah wah waaaaah

The whole point is that they are not 'hits', so........ yeah !

Sort through your Marillion collection Easy !

Sorry NMH, I am tired and emotional.
I have notoriously poor taste in music. I am an 80's junkie who gets off on New Romantic stuff, far too mainstream for the more refined tastes coming out on this thread.

Wilts, you're the man.

You missed out Let me down easy by Betty Lavette though, the all time Northen soul classic.

Don't think Johnny Allan's Promised Land is one that got away. I distinctly remember that in the charts (low down in the charts, true, but in the Top 40). Great song though.

As for great pop songs: 7 minutes to midnight is a classic.

What about Robert Palmer's Johnny and Mary? Not a big hit, despite the Renault ads.

Are you sure about Promised Land? I remember going to my regular record shop, which was quite good at getting things, and he had barely heard of it. He tried to get me to buy Elvis instead. But perhaps I was just ahead of my time, as usual.
