I'm not in the first flush of youth and have lived outside the UK for the past 5years so am undoubtedly a bit out of touch but where did this slightly irritating new saying of "simples" originate? Seems a bit silly to me and I'm not sure I understand the need for the plural. Can anyone enlighten me?

It's due to a very popular tv advert where a meerkat says it.Sad i know but it doesn't stop there.Due to the advert,meerkat cuddly toys are selling by the bucket loads.A bit Like the Churchill nodding dog a while back.Simples.

Ok thanks. We just got the first series of the In-betweeners over here this week so wondered if it came from that. I heard that was pretty popular. I always quite enjoyed the Churchill nodding dog thing but felt guilty about it because of the Palace link.
