Not a silly saying as such, but one I like: 'Put the wood in the hole'.
People look at you blankly until you have to tell them to 'shut the door'.
Great saying my Grandad used to use and it just stuck with me.
I suppose it wouldn't have really worked as a catchphrase for Larry Grayson though....

Ah, I know this one.
To assess the age and general health of a horse the first and most telling signs are to be found with it's teeth.
So, if someone is GIVING you a horse [gift = free] then it is inappropriate to inspect its mouth to see how old / healthy it is - it's a gift, so would be kinda rude to do so.
