Well where the bloody hell is South Shields then??
A little known FACT about South Shields is that the first residents were 70 Arab bargemen brought in by the Romans in AD120 to navigate the River Tyne and keep the supplies of stone moving for the construction of Hadrian's Wall.

Somewhat ironic, is it not, to discover that the first recorded effort to secure the English border against immigrants from outside the country depended on a bunch of middle eastern labourers?

As it happens, I know quite a lot about South Shields. My grandfather's cousin was married to a photographer called James Cleet, who was commissioned by the local council in the 1930s to record street scenes of the town before all the old Victorian slums were pulled down.
