I'd go for Barry LLoyd because he brought in some cracking players with the exception of Mark Farrington, think about it-

Mike Small
John Byrne
Mark Beeney

and who could forget Sergei Gitsmanov

even Robert Codner wasn't that bad :D

Barry Lloyd. If your going for the shrewdist it has to be the 1 who got the best deals for players and Barry was the best at that (Byrne, Small, Beeney & bringing Chapman into the 1st team). Saying that I thought Nobby done well when he signed paul holsgrove on a free and sold him less than a week later for £120k.

I vote for Archie McCauley-signed Bobby Smith(who had played for England less than 1 year previously) for £5000.The crowds flocked to the Goldstone(RIP),with an average gate of 17000+ in the 4th Division.

Always thought it was Gotsmanov - one of my all-time favourites, still remember hi waving to the crowd before slotting the ball home having just split the opposition's defense.

Certainly wasn't a git :lolol:

Barry Lloyd was the worst. Snidey would be the word I would use for him. His lack of shrewdness was a liability.

My Dad would say it was Clough. He wasn't there for long but it was his squad that Mullery took to the 1st division.

Wrong ! It was Peter Taylor's squad. Clough did f*** all apart from show what a twat he was. He was too busy watching World Heavyweight Championship boxing to manage the Albion. Those of us who were there can still remember losing 8-2 at home to Bristol Rovers not to mention the disgracefull 4-0 home defeat to Walton and Hersham in the FA Cup.

As was posted above Lloyd bought a lot of class players in for nothing. The selling cheap of the likes of Dean Saunders was not his decision but rather that of Greg Stanley and that bastard Archer.

In terms of signing players the only donkey he signed was Farrington. That's against the likes of Small, Byrne, Saunders and Nogan (before he stopped scoring for fun).
