To be fair, the recruitment team have got quite a big job to do with the defence in the summer. We can’t keep running out of rightbacks, Pervis needs a backup and Colwill needs signing or replacing. Van Hecke may well have a great future but he has not pushed anyone for their positions, he only plays as cover when players need a rest or get injured. So potentially, two more centre backs are needed.

We have been unlucky with fixture congestion which has contributed to a few injuries which is something I'm sure will be addressed in the summer, especially if we get into Europe
Last night we wasn't at our best, yes we struggled to play our best first 11 what with fatigue and injuries but even then I still think Newcastle would've beaten us.
In football we win some and we lose some, we are vying for our highest ever finish and European football is still in our hands, we may lose some of our best players but I believe De Zerbi and the recruitment team will get the right players in to replace those and still have enough left to add some depth and a few upgrades here and there.

This year we could name a 25 man squad and add under 21s. This was our 25 man squad named in the summer:
Dunk, Lewis Carl*, Gross, Pascal, Lallana, Adam David*, Lamptey, Tariq Kwame Nii-Lante*, Lynch Sanchez, Robert*, Mac Allister, Alexis, March, Soloman Benjamin*, McGill, Thomas Peter Wayne*, Mitoma, Kaoru, Moder, Jakub Piotr,Mwepu, Enock, Steele, Jason Sean*, Tenorio Estupinan, Pervis Josue, Trossard, Leandro, Undav, Deniz, Van Hecke, Jan Paul, Veltman, Joel Ivo, Webster, Adam Harry*, Welbeck, Daniel*
You'll note that there are only 19 of them. the seven in italics were not available last night. The two that are no longer playing for us are struck through. The remaining ten were bolstered by U21s who don't need to be named. Obviously, the likes of Colwill, Caicedo, Gilmour, Ferguson, Enciso, Bounanotte, Ayari and Sarmiento have been part of the squad for a good part of the season and the six of these who are fit made last night's squad up to 16. With Moran, Peupion, Samuels & Offiah coming up from the U23s to make us up to 20.
At the end of this season RDZ has had to play two games a week for two months with this squad. As well as dealing with injury absences, he has to balance the medium and long term needs of a squad that is over a third under 23s, has seven players who went to the World Cup, and also features a couple of players in their thirties who have long histories of injury problems. He has been asking his available players to do more than he would have liked, but he has also had to work with the physios and doctors to understand what each is capable of and adapt his plans accordingly. The squad outperformed all expectations on Sunday, but we have to expect inconsistency in the circumstances.
Should we reach the goal and play in Europe next season we will be able to name a 25 man squad and add the U21s. Had this happened this year we would have been able to give game time to some of Alzate, Clarke, Ostigard, Duffy, Kozlowski, Karbownik, Roberts, Sima, Adringa, Connolly, Zeqiri etc. who were all either loaned out or moved on. I would imagine four of those, plus Pedro, Milner and Dahoud will be adding seven options next year and that those who are sold will be replaced.
In short, at the end of this season, we found ourselves having to play two games a week with a small, fairly inexperienced and injury ridden squad. Next year we would be doing it with a squad that is larger, more experienced and fitter.

We'd probably need half a dozen squad ready players to compete in Europe and domestically and thats before you look at departing players.
Without big investment one will suffer, the PL is too demanding for a weak squad to compete particularly when you throw in the domestic cups.
It's a quandary for the powers that be, as an overhaul will probably need around 100m invested for us to be competitive. The financial benefit of Europe certainly wouldn't offset the costs.

We should definitely worry about getting into Europe first though as there is still a lot to do to secure our place. Villa and spurs wins tomorrow and it will look very precarious

West Ham seem to be doing ok. And that includes reaching the FA Cup 5th round. Is their squad really any stronger than ours? Seriously doubt it

Yeah I agree but their position looked at risk for large parts of the season. Moyes looked likely for the chop a few months back.West Ham seem to be doing ok. And that includes reaching the FA Cup 5th round. Is their squad really any stronger than ours? Seriously doubt it
