Under Sven we've reached the quarter finals of two major tournaments in a row, no English manager has achieved that since Sir Alf - and you could argue that the competition is much harder now.
So, we lost to Portugal on penalties. But they're no pushovers; we've lost our previous two competitive games to Portugal too; this time they had home advantage, so a draw is a creditable result.
I just don't understand how Sven has 'failed'. Our record under him is better than nearly all previous managers. The trouble is that too many people on here seem to think that we're some under-achieving world force: we're not. We not in the top tier internationally, we haven't been for some time and it's no good blaming Sven for that.

no, we have only lost 3 meaningful games under him, brazil, france. if it weren't for the ref against portugal we would have won the game and the competition because he has good main mangement skills, stick with him and we will win the world cup in 2006

So what your saying is that in the 2 tournaments we have been in we have lost to Brazil , France and Portugal. Not very good I would say.

England blew their chances in the tournament big time against France. That's where the rot set in. No getting away from it. Beckham should have buried them with that penalty, and to lose two goals in injury time like that was just dismal. They'll never have a better chance. Don't see how Sven can be blamed for that game in any shape or form.

It finished 2-2 and they beat us on penalties. That counts as a draw, and will go on England's record as a draw. Penalty shootouts count as draws, not wins or losses.

Sven inmho seems to have one tactic, and that is to score and sit back and defend. If something goes wrong then...(if there was one) it's time to go to plan b. Butr we never seem to have a plan b.
On receiving the ball England just welly back up the pitch to the oppsoing team as if to say "Unlucky, here try again!"
i for one will not be getting the England flag out for world cup 2006 becuase quite simply we wont win it!
Finally, Sven with his new contract is virtually un-sackable! Imagine the compo.....

The main reasons why England have been knocked out in the last two competitions are:
1. A lack of fitness. Sven himself said that 4-5 players were below the expected fitness levels BEFORE the tournament started. They had let themselves go with their English lifestyles of going out and getting hammered with their mates. Such an approach is not good enough in 2004, when they are being paid a fortune for being professional athletes. Sven asked the FA for a highly regarded fitness coach to be appointed two years ago, but was rejected on the grounds of cost, so we have lardarses such as Sammy Lee conducting the training and fitness. Consequently with so many players unfit it is no surprise that we are overrun as matches progress.
2. A lack of ability. The Premiership is exciting, but is not about keeping possession of the ball. Beckham was out most accurate with a 39% pass completion rate in Euro 2004, whereas Zidane, who was not at his best, had 61%. Without the ball you are constantly chasing shadows, and increasing the problems of a lack of fitness.

The premiership is SO overated, the article posted on NSC from The times (i think) was one of the best sport write ups I have read.
Possession of the ball I agree is where we need to improve, WHY just hoof it up to the opposition!!
Also Fitness, if players were not fit why play them??

You can't polish a turd, no matter how well you pay it. With not width, no midfield players who could dribble past a player and an inability to trap a ball it is irrelevant who the manager is. England are a very limited team, and our parochial one eyed media bestows greatness on their shoulders without considering the opposition. Notice that foreign clubs do not come in for English players, (Beckham is merely at Real for commercial purposes) and the reason is that the players are not good enough and the players do not want to improve themselves.
Manchester United are the richest club in the world by far, yet their record in Europe is piss-poor considerring the resources at their disposal. The reason why is the English game is too simple and one dimensional, and they get out thought and out passed when up against skilful opponents. This is then reflected in the limitations of the national side.
There is a greater chance of Guy Butters passing through the eye of a needle than England winning anything, under Sven or anyone else.

He's a good enough manager for any club team but you need someone with some national passion about this country to give the players that extra G-ing up. For some players it seemed like it means nothing wearing that England shirt.
