Should Sven be SACKED ?

I agree this tournament is an opportunity missed, but 2006 has always been the target.

That, I'm afraid, is just an excuse to "buy time", so that we all forgive and forget the current failures. Rather like Houlliers "Five Year Plan" (in other words, we might by shit now, but we'll be OK by then).

As for who is there to replace Sven - we are talking about what should be the most prestigeous (and lucrative) International managers job in the world. I can't believe that in the World game, there isn't a list of suitable candidates who would be prepared to take the job (and I have no objection to another foreign coach coming in, if he fits the bill). There is ALWAYS someone who can come in.

Well the mess he took over in 2001, it was going to take time, coupled with the fact Martyn and Seaman were coming to the end and there was nobody to take over. This team will go into 2006 average age of about 28 and be class.

Someone with proven managerial success at International level.

Someone who isn't afraid to make radical, potentially unpopular decisions.

Someone who can think on their feet and make effective tactical changes during a match.

Someone who doesn't indulge the star players when they are not performing.

Someone who will actually manage the team, and not just try to be their best friend.

There's gotta be someone out there...

Pressure to succeed and get a trophy and live up to the aspirations of the fans and press. Seems to be a devine right to win every tournament if your an England fan or press these days.

would've agreed with that pre euro2004 but right now I think we have the makings of a team capable of actually getting somewhere, if that somewheres the WC semi-final then thats good in my book. We are above average and the future is bright...not orange but White!

I think 4-2 England, in the final in Munchen, at the beginning of July 2006 has a nice ring to it....

He has " achieved " no more than any English coach would have done and is paid £ 5 000 000 per annum to produce sod all.

Everyone expected us to get through the group stages and therefore what did he achieve. We lost to Portugal and France who were both beaten by the Greeks !.

Not a divine right, just a realisation that this is a good England side, that should be at its peak in the next tournament.

Maybe the bigger problem is not the mentality that we have a divine right to win, but this horible British mentality of going along to make the numbers up.

In 2002, I thought 2004 was a tournament too soon.

It is just that this one opened up for us again.

Its not so much that we lost again in the Quarters that is grinding my crank.
Its the fact that we were utter GASH in that match against Portugal - and it had more than a slight echo of the Brazil match of 2002.
Now Portugal and France are competent International performers, but both of those teams are past their best, and we should have been capable of beating both of them - especially as we had the lead in both games as well. Now you could say that the luck wasn't with us. Disallowed goals, missed penalties, etc. But that would be conveniently ignoring the fact that, in terms of possession, both of those teams absolutely batterered us. They put us under sustained, intense spells of pressure, and dictated the game for long periods.

Of course, if we hold on, we come out with the "heroic rearguard" and "defending for our lives" platitudes - but shouldn't we be better than that ? Shouldn't a midfield including Beckham, Lampard and Gerrard be able to dictate to the other team and retain the ball for long periods ? Shouldn't any coach worth his salt be able to devise a system whereby we are NOT defneding for our lives for most of the game ?

If people on here think that England have reached their level, and that we can expect no more of them, then fine. Its a valid opinion. But I think this team should be capable of far more than that, and this happy-clappy relationship between Sven and the players has once again contrived to let us down badly when it came to the crunch. Right now, I see absolutely no reason to expect any different in 2006.

I can see a glorious defeat in 2006 against Holland in the quarter finals when we have a player unfairly sent off and we manage to hold the 1-0 lead until the 88th minute when an unfair penalty is awarded against us.

Needless to say in extra time we " heroically " defend this lead with 10 men but needless to say lose on penalties.

Ah well theres always the 2008 Euro Sven.
