if pubs were open for 24 hours the local residents wouldnt be too happy with drunk people throwing up in their garden all hours of the day, although in theory it sounds like an ok idea who would decide to go down the pub at 5am for a few drinks?!! :drink:

Even in Europe the pubs rarely saty open after 1 or 2 depending on where they are with the obvious exeption of British holiday resorts.

Night workers? Happens in the pubs round Smithfield Market without any fuss or bother and probably loads of other places also.

brighton, actually
yes but what about the children?

well, actually the staff - i am sure some night owls would want to work late, but i hope there is some protection against it becoming part of a normal working week,, also extra wage guarantees, for unsocial hours.

sems to work ok in Spain (Ibiza), where the bars have to close for 5 hours, of their choice, in every 24....the only hassle i ever saw is when the reps take people on the ripoff 'bar crawls'

(i got stung with a 5 euro 'intro bar tour', offering a free shot in each place we visited... but only after you bought the 2nd round-
and they werent cheap! i reckon the reps are on some kickback, as other bars nearby had same/better deals on,,,

As per a couple of earlier posts I think its a great idea. Speed drinking is a big problem in Britain (Brighton certainly), its when I get most pissed anyway. Did you know that a man can drink for 24 hours solid at a pint per hour and not be pissed. So why not open them 24/7? I reckon that would reduce the amount of piss heads in the city dramatically.

I think that this is a good idea or at least if they are not going to be open 24hours then at least let places stay open later than 2:00am. The problem you get is everyone fuelled by drink suddenly out in the streets at the same time...Recipie for for disaster me thinks.

With the customers allowed to leave the clubs at staggered times the prospect of there being trouble would be a lot lower.

Companies with managers would insist that they stayed open so as ' not to miss the boat' Who would pay for it in the price of the already expensive beer? Us the punters. Having said that the vast majority of trouble comes from people throwing beer down their throats at a cheap rate at som, ewhere like JD Wetherspoons and then going onto decent pubs that have music, dartboards etc.

Just makes me realise how much I drink!

I really struggled getting used to continental nights out; going out at about 11 and not feeling the need to binge drink.

If pubs were open later here would people really drink slower or go out much later? I reckon it would just mean people drink more and get a lot more drunk!
Yes probably in the short term, but as i said, the novelty will wear off.

Of course. Obviously it would be decided on a case by case basis, but there is no reason why it couldn't work. I mean really, how many pubs would be open open 24 hours? Very few. It would just aboilish the joke of the 11pm closing time.

The 11pm closing time has been responsible for the binge drinking culture in this country. And turfing pissed up young men out onto the streets at the same time is also the main reason behind drink related disorder.

The sooner the licensing laws are abolished, the better - although I would say that their need to be special cases where neighbourhoods don't get persistently disrupted by drunks returning home at 2am.

I think pubs as pubs should disappear anyway to be replaced by bars and cafes as on the Continent.
That way food is available too and it is entirely up to the owner when they close.

When the new Licensing Act finally gets implemented (which should be in the summer of 2005) the responsibility for licensing moves from magistrates to local authorities. In theory pubs will be allowed to open for 24 hours but only at the discretion of the LAs. However, an LA cannot enforce a blanket closing time in an area so each pub's application for opening hours will be considered on its merit and be dependent on residents' objections and police advice. Therefore pubs in residential areas will be unlikely to be open much later than they are now to be honest. It all really depends on the location of the pub and how liberal the LA is (ie, will it upset voters).
Personally, I'm all for staggered closing hours for many of the reasons already mentioned.
