This isn’t the same, is it. You’re comparing apples and oranges.Neither was Pirlo, nor is Gross

He’d be fine. Of course he would. In the same way Brentford’s English left back or Newcastle’s big ol’Dan Burn would be fine at International level for England… or our very own Lewis Dunk.Arguably, he plays against better players week in, week out in the PL. Most International matches these days are against far weaker opponents.
Joel would be fine at International level.
Surely he shouldn’t be playing for us then?I’d say no. I love the guy, but he’s neither quick enough nor good enough on the ball to play as a RB or a CB at international level for me.
I don’t disagree. I’m just arguing that if he was called upon, he wouldn’t struggle as some folks are saying. He’d be fine. Of course he would. In the same way Brentford’s English left back or Newcastle’s big ol’Dan Burn would be fine at International level for England… or our very own Lewis Dunk.
That doesn’t mean there aren’t better players available for them, or players more suitable to the system.
Look, I love the guy. He’s been great for us, but I’m yet to see an argument that he’d get into the Dutch side at the moment ahead of the other players they have.
100%I have no idea what their options are. But I do think people are overestimating the quality of international football.
Fair enough. But it's only Koeman that hasn't played himHe’s had one cap since 2021. None in his 30s.

Dumfries and Rensch mainly. He’s already played 28 times for them - at 32 I can’t see why he wouldn’t be recalled to the squad ?
Who are the current Dutch RB’s that are getting picked ahead of him ?
And I agree with that. I was lambasted for saying England would’ve been better calling up actual left backs from the Prem in the summer, rather than pushing players out of position.I don’t disagree. I’m just arguing that if he was called upon, he wouldn’t struggle as some folks are saying.
Why? We protect his weaknesses and play to his strengths in a very clearly defined system… international football doesn’t allow for this in quite the same way.Surely he shouldn’t be playing for us then?
Ferdi's stated preferred position, that he was previously playing, was left back. Hence letting Barco goWhy? We protect his weaknesses and play to his strengths in a very clearly defined system… international football doesn’t allow for this in quite the same way.
And surely the signing of Ferdi was a look to the future and potentially replacing him anyway?
We wouldn’t have scored with Veltman in the team tonight - there’s no way he puts that cross in for the goal. And the failures against Wolves and Ipswich also happened with him in the team.Hugely missed him tonight defensively to be honest.
Lamptey did very well, no knock to him and a great assist. But Van Hecke filling at right back was pretty bad, reminded me of when Virgo played right back.
Joel is such an underrated player (outside of the club and NSC) and we wouldn’t benefitted from what he brings tonight

I didn’t say he was the issue, and Lamptey was excellent with the assist and did well generally as I said above. We wouldn’t have scored with Veltman in the team tonight - there’s no way he puts that cross in for the goal. He’s an excellent player, no doubt, but Lamptey wasn’t the issue this evening.
I definitely agree with the last bit. I don’t know what he was trying to achieve putting JPVH there…I didn’t say he was the issue, and Lamptey was excellent with the assist and did well generally as I said above.
But I’m viewing it more from an angle of organisation and mentality. Veltman does so much “behind the scenes”, you can see why managers love him. He’s constantly chirping, has a brilliant football brain (which covers his lack of pace, attacking ability, height). Similar to Groß in that sense.
We certainly would’ve been better ending the game with him at right back than Van Hecke.
Spot on. It affects the defence crucially & subsequently the whole team when JV is missing. We become 'little old Brighton' & lack ruthlessness & maturity, especially now Groß is gone. As Fab said in the week, Veltman knows how to win games. Without his experience, guile & ruthlessness Saints always had a chance. & a team expecting top 6 & dreaming of top 4 shouldn't have given them a chance. We were weak, immature & naive tonight all over the pitch but when the back is solid that changes.Hugely missed him tonight defensively to be honest.
