Seb Carole - all that glitters is not gold

I thought the man of the match award was justified. Yes, he didn't put that many crosses into the box but he was continually trying to make things happen. He was our most likely source of goal and was very unlucky with the shot Douglas saved. The final product needs work but he will rip league one defences apart.

Disagree. With everything else that's going on, surely this is not the time to dig out Carole. Who else in the team has the same level of ball control and the confidence/ability to take on 2 or 3 players on a run???

Exactly, the only other skillfull person is CKR who is on the bench.

Exactly, hammond just hooked the ball in and they couldnt deal with it, we didnt do that enough yesterday. Just seen hammonds second yellow on tv and theres no way it was a yellow, the bloke should have been booked for diving.

Probably would have been better had CKR been brought on rather than JR.

The 2nd booking was unfortunate but it happens week in week out when a player runs across another player there is inevitably contact which cannot be avoided, but the offending player gets bopoked.

What annoyed me more was the first booking where the No 4 for Leicester stayed down like he had broken his leg until Hammond was booked then he got straight up having achieved his aim.

I'm not having a dig. He's our most skillful player and he should be our best player, but I dont he think he is because there's no product to what he does. What use is good ball control and the ability to take on 2/3 players if you get no nearer the goal or no nearer a telling pass.

My criticism is of the application of his talent. It's a reasonable bit of constructive crticism. That surely is helpful in times like this.

Agree 100 per cent. The thing about Seb is that he is not an orthodox winger like Frutie who atempts to go for the byline cross.

Carole is all about running directly at defenders and playing 1-2s and getting himself or other players into shooting positions, or slipping through balls in behind defences for our forwards to run on to. There is no doubt that Seb's distribution could be better, but if he could make defence-splitting passes to order, he would be playing in the Premiership not with us.

Now Frutie is an orthodox winger. He will generally take the man on the outside and put in the byline cross, that is his game. For what it's worth, I reckon he would have been disappointed with his deliveries yesterday, too many too near the goalie rather than on the line of our incoming forwads.

At least he put a couple in. For all of Carole's trickery and neat link-up play, there are times when he just needs to get the cross in. It doesn't help when he's backed up by El Abd, who seems to lack the confidence in his abilities to even attempt a cross.

I've read quite a few threads and posts here where people are convinced that Carole was our best player yesterday - he even got man of the match.

Am I alone in thinking that he was AWFUL yesterday.

Yes. I can understand why he wasn't the BEST player, but he didn't play 'awful'.

well it was obviously yesterday that as soon as Carole went off injured we did not really look like creating anything again.

Lets have some support for these players and the manager at this time. At the moment we need to create to score goals and the two most likely players to do that are our flying Frenchmen!

Best two buys of the season by far!

Carole is quality. Sorry, it's the others who are not up to it. Reading are proving that exciting wingers like Convey and Little are the way to play.

Am I alone in thinking that he was AWFUL yesterday. I think there's no doubt he's our most skillful player, but as a winger yesterday, I'm pretty sure he didn't put ONE ball in the box. If I'm mistaken and he did, it certainly wasn't accurate. Yesterday, he had all the tricks, jinks and turns but no end product whatsoever. In terms of value to the team performance I thought Frutos was head and shoulders above him.

I'm inclined to agree with McCammon on this one. I don't think the strikers get any kind of service from midfield - this is damning when we have players of Carole's quality in the team! I felt sorry for Gatting yesterday, how can we tell how good he is if he's given nothing to work with?

So Mr Carole, less glitter more GOLD please. You have the talent and you should be helping us destroy teams like Leicester.

My thoughts exactly.

I can't believe anyone would even think of criticising Carole after that performance. He was easily our best player and probably the games best player. There were lots of players that could justify a negative thread but Carole certainly wasn't one of them. I somtimes wonder if i've watched the same game as everyone else when I read things like this.

I saw the same game as you. They haven't a clue.

Except the delivery from Convey and Little is first-class. Early, accurate and consistent. In this respect Carole is always lacking.

I disagree, he was not even near our best player yesterday. Our most skilfull player? Yes. The player with the most tricks? Yes. But not our best player - there was very little end product.

Sorry about the negative thread, but we lost against relegation rivals. It was to be expected, but even so, I'm not being harsh or having a go, I'm suggesting that yesterday was mostly about glitter and not about gold from Carole. I think both Carole and McGhee would probably agree.

You are entitled to your opinion that Carole was excellent yesterday, but I'm entitled to mine - I thought he, along with the 10 others, were poor.

Hopefully, with a little more focus on end product Carole will set the next game alight. He's certainly more than capable.

I don't deny he's quality, I just thought he was poor yesterday. He has more skill than either Convey or Little, but I would have either of them ahead of the Carole of yesterday.

As ever, it's a bit more complicated than you say.

The Reading midfield are able to launch their wingers into space far more often than we are able to put Carole away, who usually has to do all the hard work by himself.

Secondly, and more crucially, the Reading wingers have Kitson, Doyle and Lita to play off, Carole has a bunch of fill-ins and coming teenage players.

One of the truly remarkable things on NSC is to see the Leon Knight (useless finishing, useless delivery, useless workrate) fan club laying into Carole. If that doesn't beat all, I f***ing don't know what does.
