A sports and entertainment arena will be the heart of a £400m development for south London.

A 12,500-seater arena is to be the centrepiece of the Croydon Gateway site, next to East Croydon station.

The development will create 3,400 jobs

The venue will be able to host events from ice hockey and basketball to rock concerts and aims to be the UK's main venue for Paralympic events.

The development, which could open in 2008, will also include 800 homes, shops, restaurants, a plaza and cafes.

Developers say the project will bring 3,400 jobs to the area.

Croydon Council leader Hugh Malyan said the development would "not only bring back into use an area that is currently wasted, it will bring jobs, sport, music and a real sense of excitement to Croydon town centre."

He added the council was keen to see the site, "at one of London's most important transport hubs" developed as soon as possible.

Part of the site is owned by the council but the rest is subject to a compulsory purchase order.

A plaza will link the station to the town centre

If that order is successful then construction will begin in 2005.

Developers Arrowcroft and StadiVarios have signed a "memorandum of understanding" with the British Paralympic Association.

This establishes the arena as a prime UK venue for regional, national and international Paralympic events.

They say the site is "strategically important" as a gateway to Croydon and will help regenerate the town centre.

Can we have a stadium please?

erm, yes actually, it has & I believe (may be wrong here though) has been approved. By 2008 Black Rock will be Brighton International Arena, an 11,500 seater thingy much like the one in London:clap2:

Mind you, it was the Anus I heard it in though:glare:

Selma Montford (not a native of Brighton) and her cronies reckon that if they block all developments in Brighton they will reduce the number of properties. Hence the value of their own gentrified properties will soar.
The only positive thing about Selma Montford is that she prevented BR from demolishing Brighton Station. Since then she has been a totally negative Nimby and has indirectly forced a lot of local people out of Brighton. rant over

Found out now.

Here's a gem from her.......... cars take the bus!!!!!!

Selma Montford, honorary secretary of the Brighton Society and the Preston and Old Patcham Society, told yesterday's hearing that park-and-ride schemes did not work.

She said: "Park and ride actually increases pollution and congestion in the areas where the cars park to be taken into the city by bus.

"The council is using park-and-ride as a cosy proposal which fails to offer solutions."

As I said the other day, I was the ESCC officer who was responsible for planning the Withdean shoppers' park and ride service, way back in the early 90s. At the time, Selma was very supportive of what we were trying to do - reduce traffic in the City Centre. The Park & Ride project even sponsored a leaflet she published about William Roe, the eighteenth century landowner who bought up the Withdean estate and began its development. Her leaflet even advertised the Park & Ride service.

Sadly, she's now jumped on the bandwagon of opposing almost everything that is put forward - on the grounds that it must be a threat to Regency Brighton. The needs of the City ain't that simple.

Mind you, with the capacity at 12500, the Croydon International Arena should be the perfect size for Palace to move into as a replacement for decrepit Selhurst Park.

Still, it will provide thousands of jobs for all the illiterate, unemployed losers in and around Croydon.

Serving fries in the attached Burger King, obviously.
