And at Hartlepool there was a well known scout from the Toon who was there to look at "the centre half".

He asked me about the number 19, who he thought had a great touch.
I hope I didnt wreck Jake's chance of a move to Tyneside.

Meanwhile, in the North East, a highly rated ex-Albion centre back is having a torrid time of things......

Elphick is younger than McShane was when he came here and McShane did have more experience (both first team football and just being with Manchester United). He was a good player but he had a very frantic, last ditch style of defending, because his positioning was not always the best and that is every bit as important as being a good tackler or a good header the higher up you go. I didn't think he would make a Premiership player based on his time here. Elphick is a bit different, he has a more assured style albeit in League One. I certainly think he will progress to at the very least be a very good Championship defender.

Although having said that, scouts from Premiership clubs are always looking at players in the lower leagues, at first team and youth levels. That is what they are there for!

elphick MIGHT develop into a player who could do it in the lower reaches of the premiership

its still early though, and one decent season doesnt mean he is going to be good enough for that level. whatever happens, i still think we will make a very good profit out of him

Agree with all of that but when are we going to start holding on to our better home produced players rather than making a profit out of them?

never - there are virtually no clubs outside of the top 4 now who can hold onto thier best young produced players

Elphick is quality, if he keeps progressing at this rate there is a bloody good chance he will play in the Premiership someday. We know Chelsea have the money and probably don't care if Elphick isn't good enough for another 3-5 seasons. I'm sure they would easily get some takers from the Championship to grab him on loan (assuming we sold him of course)
