Leek
Leek is a wonderful little market town that has plenty of local shops owned and run by people living in Leek. I understand 'times are tight' and that we look for a bargain, but last year i went back to East Grinstead and yes the High Street still has character (maybe because much of that is listed) but London Rd !! Suppot your Butcher,Baker and Candlestick maker.

I once posted on here that the major threat to our national identity rather than immigration was the death of the high street.

Pointing out that we are turning into Americans where we have drive miles to a "mall".

I also pointed out rather controversially that immigrants to London have revitalised high streets, getting out there working hard and selling food cheaper than Tescos etc...

I was laughed at.

Never thought about it that way before but yes your dead right London high streets are full of enterprising immigrant families bringing the community back to where they should be shopping,I live in the States now and the two local large towns are dead because of the Malls if the UK ends up like here it would be a great shame.

why? care to make a case for why the high street needs to be saved, or are you going to leave it at notions of "character"?

I agree , we are trying hard to save the shops in Haywards Heath even the Curry Houses are struggling?

There is a place for the High Street but it needs to adapt.

You can't buy a coffee or a sandwich on the internet for instance.

There are many problems easily solved by legislation if any government had the bollocks to do it.

Supermarkets cheaper ? That's a joke when it comes to fruit and veg. I can buy at least three times the veg in tooting for the same price as Tescos. So markets need to encouraged and planning laws changed so they pop up anywhere.

Landlords need to get real about their rents. Sorry guys but the reason your shops are boarded up is no-one can afford to set a shop up there. Same goes for business rates.

Supermarkets hate any form of competition so forget that free market rubbish. They often operate like Soviet states. I got a bizarre PM on here once from the marketing department of a major supermarket when I complained about their practices.

I was questioning whether they should really be allowed to open a "local" a few metres from their major store. The person in question freely admitted to me it was to knock out competition of an independent store that was open all hours.

So my viewpoint is that if you habitually shop at supermarkets and defend their manipulation of markets and power they have over the state through their political donations you are in effect a communist.

A banana is 11p in Asda, you saying you can get three bananas for 11p? If I could buy a banana for 5p at a Grocers I'd go.

You're part right. However shopping in a physical shop is dying due to Internet shopping and te ever rising cost of fuel.

Why drive around trying to buy meat, apples and wares for your home when you can buy it all either online or in one shop AND at a considerably lower price.

We go to the butchers in Southwick for a "treat" because the beef in there is expensive and that's the same in most high street shops.

I would love to shop at our local bakers , butchers and green grocers is because they are too expensive!

I know Tooting well and it must have the cheapest fruit and veg in the country. There are so many market stalls all trying to under-price each other that you always get the best deal.

Yeah, one of the things that irritates me is when people say "it's cheaper than the supermarket". I'm sure there are some areas and some little high streets where that's true, but up at Fiveways it most definitely is not the case. We've got a smashing little greengrocers with a fabulous range, but cheap it ain't. In our area ASDA is still the cheapest place for food and clothes.
