A new drama based on the excellent book about the forming of the SAS, by Ben Macintyre. Could be good.

I saw the three part documentary based on the same source material and enjoyed that. Paddy Mayne and other great characters that were in the first incarnation of the elite force.

I have some reservations, it’s done by the Peaky Blinders team, so may end up looking like a music video. But it may be worth a punt.

A very good book and recommended reading for those interested in the era - as are most of them from Mr Macintyre.

Paddy Mayne (fiery-tempered Irishman in the series) was an absolute headcase. He took no prisoners as you will see.

I have been looking forward to this for a while. Is there a date for the first episode yet?

No airing date yet but later this year. I reckon December.

Written by Steve Knight who did Peaky Blinders (ugh, shite after the first series in my opinion), Locke (best thing Tom Hard has done) and Taboo ( not bad) among various films. He’s a very inconsistent writer. Ranges from awful to sublime.

Looking forward to seeing how they portray Paddy, the absolute maniac! Played by Jack O’Connell. If they stick to the source material, could be a belter. Good cast.

Don't they usually tend to debut these soldier-y type dramas on Remembrance Sunday? I think it looks potentially very good.

Will be rubbish, none of the current generation have any idea of how WWII people thought or acted.

What a daft post.

“WWII people” thought and acted the same way people do now and have done forever. They are human beings in extraordinary circumstances . They were people like you or me, plucked from their lives to fight tyranny. To make out they were somehow not everyday people who nevertheless answered the call, is to completely misunderstand history and human nature and does a disservice to those who had to find courage from within. Milkmen, teachers, farmers, butchers. All called upon to put their lives on the line.

Having said that, the men of the SAS were rather a breed apart and I don’t think many people acted like them. But a majority of “WWII people” were men and women from ordinary walks of life.

Can I point you toward Saving Private Ryan, Band Of Brothers, 1917 (even further removed), The Pacific, etc etc.

By your measure, all historical drama is rubbish.

This may be rubbish but it won’t be for the reason you typed.

The book was written by Ben McIntyre.

During WWII in Egypt one of my former bosses was recommended to join the Long Range Desert Group as he was a good mechanic and spoke the local dialect quite well. He lasted about a minute in an interview and they said no your too fair-headed as they wanted dark haired and dark skinned soldiers, so they could blend in.

None of the above had characters that acted how they would have done in their era, perhaps you should do some research and see how (especially) servicemen actually behaved.

As for research, I’ve done my share. I spent a few weeks being taught by by some of the consultants on SPR and BoB for a film I did back in 2002 and the same guys for another film in 2010. I’d love for you to tell them to their faces that they don’t know what they are talking about. I’m by no means an expert but I listened to what I was being taught and your statement doesn’t ring true to my experience.

The veterans interviewed and portrayed by actors on BoB have stated it was very accurate. Of course there will be artistic license but to claim they they didn’t act like that? How could you possible know? And I doubt you know more than people whose job it is to research and carry out consultation for war dramas.

“The way WWII people thought or acted”. They all thought and acted the same way, then?

What is your experience/research?

No they didn't, they lived in a different time and had a different outlook on life, based on deference and so they behaved differently - I'm not saying that they were not heroic - my point is that modern films portray them as modern people which they were not.

Research?

I have been reading/collecting military history, especially more obscure stuff, since the late 1960's.

Would you care to explain how (in)accurate the start and finish of Private Ryan is?
