I think they had to let him speak to them - what would be the point of stopping him and creating bad blood between RHB and the club? It might also have had a bad effect on other players

While he'll probably go, it's not a nailed on certainty - he's very young to be taking on the captaincy of a club, it might well be detrimental to his career.

I have a feeling he will stay with us for the remainder of his contract, then move to Surrey. If the end of next season...

That doesn't really make sense though. We've given them permission to speak to him NOW, and we know that Surrey are desperare for a skipper NOW, having allegedly been turned down by Rob Key already. This deal is to make NOW, not next year.

The only reason we would do a deal now if to get compensation money, as opposed to another seasons performance out of RHB.

If he does go, we are losing a batsmans, a bowler and a bit of a leader. Can we replace that with the compensation money? I think it would be very tough

Tough or not, we've given permission, Surrey have apparently done everything within the rules (even if it stinks), so sadly if he wants to go, we will get some compensation, but he will be gone.:rant::angry::rant:

I think we should get some balance here. Rory is young but so far his bowling is useful but no more than that and his batting has been erratic. I think more than anything it is his personality that attracts.

At the moment he is a useful 4 day player and a decent one day player but no more than that. I could not for instance see him playing for any of the top sides such as Durham and Somerset in the four day game.

Sussex is a good batting wicket but I have not seem him take advantage.

Over the years we have seen others leave Sussex such as say Speight, Law, Wells, Phillips and they have moved into obscurity. Salisbury tried his luck at Surrey and I suppose did OK but no more than that.

Rory needs to be careful. I think results and performances show that Sussex is a far better managed county than Surrey. Money is not everything.

Somerset? Top side? After Worcester, I thought they were the weakest side we played in the county championship last season and expect them to struggle next season.

As for RHB, Surrey's cynicism is breathtaking. I'm sure they don't really want him as a captain. The offer has only been made to make sure that he listens to their bid.

Somerset only did so well this season because they made the Taunton pitch so flat that any score under 700 was considered poor. Almost every game there was drawn.
