A cautionary tale of what a decade can mean in football.

Title winners, Champions League, FA Cup winners, Europe, relegation??

Went down a path of believing they were a big fish, and tragedy struck and the next person in charge of the pond didn’t agree. Sometimes prudence is the better side of valour…or something…
Leicester’s undoing was their decision to sell so many key players in a short space of time, then not sell overvalued assets at their peak and reinvesting. They’ve run themselves into the ground through poor transfer business over a number of years, very similar to Everton (but with much more success in between).

This is a really good point. Plenty of learning for the Albion hierarchy.

What went wrong?

1. I think they tried to keep some players too long, they got unhappy. Players like Ndidi, Tielemans and Mahrez.

2. They got lucky with the signings of Mahrez & Kante. This led to a false belief that they had the most amazing recruitment system.

3. They lack senior leaders on the pitch now. Schmeichel leaving was pivotal.

4. They kept Rodgers too long.

5. They failed to invest in their academy properly?

6. Vardy looks like a diseased rat.

Also, just that football goes in cycles, you're good for a while, then you're bad for a while. Enjoy the ups and don't lose heart too much during the downs

Their undoing is financial.

The family lost the man who made all the money in a helicopter crash and then the business lost a fortune in lockdown as they make most of it on Duty Free shops. They had to sell.

What's going on with Jesse Marsch? Was linked with Southampton but talks broke down, was linked with Leicester but then either withdrew himself, or leicester decided not to procede with him (depending on who you listen to).

He turns up to the interview and tries to explain about the goals being in the centre of the pitch and not on the wings. Interview ends.

I believe he was looking for a permanent role. Both clubs decided to instead go with a short term option instead.

The chairman died in Oct 18 but Rodgers guided them to the FA Cup win in May 21. Indeed, they beat Citeh in the Charity Shield, reached the semis of the Europa Conference and finished a respectable 8th last season.

It is incredible how the wheels have come off so quickly. Schmeichel and Fofana leaving were massive, I think Faes in / Soyuncu out hasn't worked, Tielemans seems to have had his head turned, Father Time has caught up with Vardy, Patson Daka has not fired. It really doesn't look good for them.

If they were to be relegated it would be one of the biggest surprises I can remember in the PL era. Ipswich going down after finishing 5th maybe, but that was a 2 season arc. Leicester have been very good in the last 5 years and have only this season crumbled and fallen away dramatically. It shows how quickly what you've built can fall apart and that will be a warning to all clubs outside of the select 7 who have no real concerns about being able to maintain a level of investment in their squad.
