In his book, when he was angling for a move from Birmingham to Blackburn:

"They offered me a chauffeur-driven car. Every Monday off. David Sullivan wanted me to go round for tea to his home. I thought I'd better start playing badly to get my dream. My last game for Birmingham was against Newcastle United on New Year's Day, 2005. I didn't try at all. We lost 2–1 at St James Park. I was terrible".

Nice one "Sav". A professional footballer deliberately playing shit so he could get a move ? Going by his performances on loan down here, I think its more a case of him actually being shit anyway, don't give me this 'better start playing badly' bollocks.

Hopefully someone will damage him soon.

He is 'a character' though, so we have to love him. Presenting Five Live 606, Jesus. What is happening to national radio. Still, if you don't like it, there's always the other lot on talkSPORT...where it's Stan Collymore.

He is a legend. THE END.

Only in this country could someone like him be considered a "legend". Anywhere else he'd be acknowledged as a shit player, and an utter tool to boot. The fact he's probably on at least £40k a week perfectly illustrates just how badly wrong the game has gone here.

To put it into perspective the paragraph thats been missed before this says

I was having a miserable time, that was true. Fans yelled “Judas” at me. There were death threats. I took my wife Sarah to a car show at the NEC, holding my baby son Charlie in my arms. A yob walked up to me and spat in my face. It was disgusting. Then he just looked at me and said “w*****.”

Can't condone that idiot fan obviously.

But from Savages point of view, when you're being paid more in a week than most people earn in two years, its not much to expect to knuckle down and play football to the best of your abilty for the duration of the sizable contract he was on there. How f***ing "miserable" can you possibly be, having your arse wiped for you in the Premiership, living in a huge mansion in Cheshire, and driving around in an array of supercars you only usually ever see on Top Gear. He's just sadly typical of the cossetted, mollycoddled dickheads who play professional football at the highest levels, and as a result live their lives in their own little bubble, completely detached from reality.

The charge of "Prick" stands, m'lud.
No further questions.

After looking through a number of papers last week about his depression etc, it can get quite serious, and Savage himself went quite low. As an example from the quote above, how can anyone say that recieving death threats, and not being able to go out without being spat at is acceptable?
I like him, always comes across as a character, but a very decent bloke going by his interviews when he joined us for the short while he did.

I think you have got this one very very wrong Easy and that surprises me as you are usually spot on with your observations.

Playing football is a job, I reckon underperforming to get a better job if you're current one was causing you to be depressed, be spat at and recieve death threats is fair enough

He is utter shite on 606 though, but then again fans phone in's have well & truly had their day & are just boring now.
"Hi Robbie/Stan/Adrian etc, I was at the Man U game today & it was never offside......blah blah".
The format is dead for me; I just want some good opinion, reasoned debate etc.
So it's the Monday Night Club on 5 live & the Guardian Football Weekly for me. Both available on Podcast which is handy for me.

Did anyone hear what Savage said about his time at Brighton on 606 this week? "Lovely place to live, I got wolf whistled on my first day". Probably cos you look like a f***ing tart!

I know he was shit when he was down here. But his carrer record speaks for itself. Everyone said Vinnie Jones was shit, but Sheff Utd, Leeds, Chelsea all won promotions after signing Jones to there ranks. These type of players may not be everyones idea of the beautifull game, but they cetainly do a job, even if it isnt to pretty on the eye.

Savage has courted controversy over his career and although there's no way you can accept some of the behaviour that has come his way it's partly his own fault thanks to his high profile persona. To openly admit that he didn't try when he wanted out at Birmingham is not a very clever thing to do even for a footballer. The fact that the bloke gets paid a fortune to do a job that most people would give a substantial part of their anatomy does not tend to evoke much sympathy in me.

It seems Easy is "not for turning"

It is possible to be depressed, even if you are a millionaire you know. Just because he found someone gullible enough to pay him £40k a week, isn't his fault.

They say money can't buy you happiness, but of course, most people who don't have it, assume that it will and resent those that have it.

Yeah he's a bit of a cock for sure, but he's had more than his share of dark days Easy, come on, easyup there fella

He might be a "likable cheeky chappy" when we see him in interviews.

But how would you feel if (for example) Gary Dicker decided he wanted away from the Albion and started agitating for a move, but Gus held him to his contract. He then decided to simply "down tools" on the pitch and put no effort in whatsoever, playing so shite that it contributed to costing us games ?

I think 'prick' would be one of the milder terms I'd be using for him if that ever happened.

So he became "depressed" because Birmingham were holding him to his contract when he wanted to go to Blackburn ?

Dark days indeed

I'd blame the Manager for it getting to that situation, and send the player packing. This happens quite a lot in football these days where players go because the Manager knows they wont perform if they are forced into a situation, ok Mr Savage has his own way of dealing with it, but Managers are expected to deal with this type of man management
