So every train manager should up sticks and leave? To a new job? On less money? In the area they've settle or elsewhere? Outside their area of expertise?

And what if they have a point?

Should everyone who is unhappy with their working conditions just move jobs becuase it's REALLY THAT EASY?

Come on. This race to the bottom of worker's rights is NOT helpful.

So have their contracts changed or are they still the same as when the managers first signed them ( knowing the T&Cs ) ?

Indeed, but what should in theory be an hour each way on the train (give or take) over the last six months has been a three act opera and because of the ********ery all round its impacting on peoples work life balance.

I don't regard myself as someone who spends too much time working. I do spend too much time commuting because of the utter cretins we have in charge and the idiots who want to call a five day strike when the passengers (you know those really affected) are pissed about daily!

Fair enough. I do think work-life balance is an important element of worker's rights and therefore an item worth fighting for though.

I din't have that information but I do know that losing money through striking isn't the first course of action for the vast majority of people.

This piece in the FT says they'll be striking on the East Coast as well. While I don't know the ins and outs of the RMT, is it wise to have so many fires going at once? Or are they trying to overwhelm train operators/DfT by a continual rolling action that shifts between operators?

The disagreement seems to be about Eurostar not honouring a 2008 agreement. So the contract hasn't changed, but Eurostar are (according to the RMT) not living up to their end.

RMT - The little boy who cried wolf. I am sure they have some genuine grievances at times but they have held the country to ransom too many times to engender any support from me. Unions that know they can hold large numbers of people to ransom and abuse the power have ruined genuine uses of unions for me.

Before this thread descends into predictably entrenched positions (too late?) does any one really understand the specific issues in each of these disputes and how intransigent/reasonable both sides have been?.

I'm not sure there's any need to actually take time to understand the issues at play in order to weigh into the dinosaur militant lefties.

Both the FT and the BBC (which are the top hits from Google) just call it "a 2008 agreement". That's all the info I have. The articles mostly talk about the ongoing Southern dispute to pad it out a bit.

I read that on the BBC but there was no real detail as to what the agreement was. As per usual the union call a strike but don't give enough detail to get public support. It's similar to the Govia DOO issue - not once has the union provided statistics of accidents / injuries / incidents on conductor trains versus DOO trains - so their argument around it being about safety is somewhat dulled.

Both sides seem to be poor about providing info though. Southern talk about increased sickness, but don't provide figures etc... It's almost as if they're both presenting arguments that are fronts for a different dispute.

eurostar jumping on the bandwagon
it does seem as though they are breaking a long standing agreement (10years) according the good old BBC shite stirring as usual and even if they are not there the French and Belgians will take up the slack

Tempting and my usual position but I was trying for a more reasonable, conciliatory, impartial line.

Saying that it is clear the RMT have an ongoing militant political agenda .. “to work for the supersession of the capitalist system by a socialist order of society.” .. which might suggest these wave of strikes are as much about sending a message to the Government than workers rights or safety.

It has always been clear what the underlying dogma behind the RMT's actions has been. The Southern management are also clearly on a course designed to reduce or obliterate the power of the RMT, however incompetently they achieve that. This isnt primarily about safety, or jobs, or the travelling public, or modernisation - its more fundamental. and political, than that for both parties.

Indeed. And for that reason I will not support any of these strikes. The moronic union people and the moronic employers need to be locked in a room, have their heads banged together and stop the collective willy waving.

you should read the current offer ( in the other thread about pag 226, or Southern's site). its difficult to see how that dispute is about "obliterate the power of the RMT" when they have conceded to nearly all their demands. and this dispute has nothing to do with Southern. the common factor is the RMT. so far we have no information on what the dispute is really about, some vague premise that an agreement has been broken but no detail on the agreement or how conditions are in currently implemented.
