One of the greatest living Englishman has finally handed in his dinner plate.

He was 96 and packed enough into his life for a dozen people.

War hero, scholar, linguist, hellenophile and the most brilliant of travel writers, he was one of my heroes. I hope that he left the third volume of his Constantinople trilogy for his publishers - it would be a worthwhile legacy.

Saw a documentary about him a few years back, he certainly had an interesting life! Can't recall the name of the film which told the truish story of his kidnapping of the German commander of Crete during WWII but that was real "James Bond" stuff.
