The whole saga is a mess. None of the parties come out of this well. From many observers perspective it seems that Rio and Fergie have engineered another bodyswerve over the FA.
Hodgson has taken repeated public statements by Rio that 'he was willing to do whatever it took' to win another England cap, so took this as indicating his availability. Rio has some explaining to do, especially as it took him since the squad was announced last Thursday until Sunday evening to inform Hodgson that he had yoga to attend so would not be available. Rather curious given that Rio is renowned for being constantly on social media. But then he has previous for overlooking the important stuff like drug tests and going shopping instead. Not the sharpest tool in the box. Not helped that he is overindulged by Fergie too. For a while even Fergie looked to have been bodyswerved by Rio encouraging an England recall when it seems that Fergie wanted the opposite.
I actually quite like the alternative theory that Hodgson called their bluff and deliberately flushed out Rio and Fergie into the open so he doesn't have to put up with this speculation ahead of every England game. Either Rio turns up for England now which is great for Hodgson in the short term as Rio is in decent form - but cannot really be a long term solution. Or - as it turns out the door can now close on Rio, leaving Hodgson to move on. I feel he should build a younger squad ready for the next World Cup. Players like Lescott and Cahill aren't World Class and need more international experience, they won't get that watching a half hearted Rio stroll around in San Marino.

One of the sad things about this story is that England were supposed to be moving away from the old guard, after the complete debacle of 2010. Now, 3 years on, it would appear Rio, Lampard, Cashley, Glen Johnson, Rooney, Stevie G are still central to the England manager's thinking.
Who has actually broken through in that 3 years to show they're international class? Just Joe Hart and, er, Jack Wilshere (and that's if he ever gets fit, which is a big IF).

It will be ironic if we start the crucial Montenegro match with a centre back partnership of Caulker and Lescott with Rio and Terry both fit but not playing. Total shambles.
