I remember when we used to have the little eggs on the boundary and we played Somerset in a Sunday League game and the cider drinkers were nicking the eggs and walking around with them on their heads, simple things and all that.

I remember as a kid that Viv Richards hit one once, but I can't remember exactly.
Those were the days - £9 for junior membership, Mum dropped us off at 10am in the morning in the summer holidays and told us she would pick us up again at 7pm. Then spent the day bowling in the nets, playing cricket on the field during the breaks, hassling the stars for autographs and blagging our way into the players area !

I do. What was the name of the company though? It's gone right out of my head.
I too used to spend many a summer day at the County ground. Great fun. My highlight was watching Clive Rice score 256 for Notts agains us in a CC game. I also remember a spinner from Derbys called Fred ? taking 9-20. The amazing thing about cricket was how easy it was just to go up to a world superstar like Richards/Botham and get their autograph.
Anyone remember the little yellow badges Junior members used to get?

I was there for both those games. Clive Rice was a hell of a player, always seemed to do well against us.
Fred Swarbrick was the Derbyshire player. Bald left-armer. The worst thing about that game was that Sussex actually looked like they could win it until he got amongst us. Was it really 9-20 though? Haven't got the relevant Wisden to hand to check.
The players were always happy to sign too. Never any sense of being superstars. Happy days.

Cricketers are still like it with kids today - not much has changed.
Mate who plays for Gloucestershire says he still enjoys signing autographs for kids. He doesn't mind doing it for adults either as he knows there are loads of anorak cricket fans out there.
I always rememebr Ian Botham spending at least half an hour signing autographs at the end of play long after everyone else has gone into the dressing room. I personally think he is a bit full of himself but you can't knock a man for his efforts with the kids. Viv Richards on the other hand, flatly refused to give me his autograph!

You too had the Dickie Bird grumpiness - every time I go to a test match now and see him loiterin gin the crowd I get angry with him for always refusing to sign autographs - everyone says he was a character, for character read, grumpy old man !

I was at the Scotland v Lashing 20/20 cricket match at the Grange in Edinburgh on Friday night. Countenay Walsh was playing and when not bowling was to be seen fielding on the boundary & signing autographs. My mate got him to sign the back of his ticket. What he's going to do without no-one knows. I remember on really boring days we used to practice our autographs in the hope that one day we would be asked to sign. How sad is that?
Gwylan, It was Fred SwarBROOK. I've found this by googling the name which confirms his feat. Interestingly he never got anywhere near that before or again.

After our victory over Somerset in the Gillete Cup final in 1978 me and my brother ran on to the outfield ttowards the pavilion along with about 10,000 other fans that day. Ran past Dickie Bird who promptly threw a stump at us!
Thanks Jambo. Course it was Swarbrook, just been talking about Fairport Convention on another board and got mixed up.
That 9-20 really was something. I remember us joking about him when he came on to bowl as he'd done nothing special before and soon silenced us.

His best figures against other counties bear that out most of them are 3fors and 4fors.
I'm pretty sure they were well up there in Wisden in the top ten best bowling figures of all time, if not the best. I certainly can't remember anyone getting better figures .
