You use the Evening Star, the filthiest pub in existence and yet condemn the Bell. Not my choice but certainly far better and cleaner with no smell of neat disinfectant lingering than the Evening Star.

Disinfectant cleans so not really 'filthy' is it?

Having run pubs in the docks of East London I have seen some s..tholes but none as filthy as The ES.
Genuine question I have been in there many times and never have experienced any problems what are you talking about - the toilets, inside, outside areas?

The last time was about 12 months ago and behind the bar was dirty and dusty the glasses were dirty and scratched and needed to go tbrough a glass washer with renovate to do as it says renovate them. This would then allow them to keep the head on the beer. The toilets needed cleaning and stunk of stale urine but had disinfectant throwndown to try to mask the smell. The urinals were all badly stained. As I say it was 12 months ago so things may have I improved and I may be doing them an injustice but I wont go in to find out..

I'm not a fan of the Evening Star. I don't have an issue with the cleanliness nor have I smelt the whiff of disinfectant when I've been there. The bogs aren't the place you would chose to dine, but they serve their purpose.

I've always found it a tad cliquey in there to be honest. It tends to be frequented by two types generally: Stereotype real ale Camra bearded bores with belly or okay ya hipsters from the uni, pissing up their student loans on a Friday night.

As for turning the Bell into a wine bar? Time will tell if its a success or a flop. I was never a fan of the Bell, but too many old school pubs in Brighton have been turned into poncy wine bars or bistro's. The likes of the Green Dragon and Eagle are unrecognisable now. On reflection, maybe not such a bad thing? ???

When I first started drinking my mum and dad always told me when going to a pub for the first time visit the toilets. If they are bad and the public see that imagine what tthe cellars etc that you dont see are like this advice has stayed with me well during my life as a publican.

But members of the public don't normally spray piss all over the cellars of a pub?

Fair enough thanks for writing the response.

Reading through that lot still didnt really give me a picture of whether the Bell is still a pre match pub of choice.... but I did find out that the Evening Star stinks.

Not in Whitechapel
I used to drink in The Bell until I found a much superior pub which is about 30 seconds away, so I shall stick with the Caxton Arms next season.

Same price for a pint as the Bell, but a nicer choice of drinks (both Larger & Ale), lovely food, BT Sports, Free pool and table tennis and it's never mobbed. Perfect.
