RAF Marham 'kidnap attempt'

It may well not be an act of Islamic terrorism. But what is it that makes you want it not to be Islamic so much?

Because if it is a couple of blokes with no connection to Islam then those two blokes will get the blame (and this thread will fade to obscurity). If it is an act of Islamic terrorism then millions of people worldwide will get the blame (and this thread will go on and on).

Interesting question though. I wonder if anyone will be game to answer it in negative.

What makes you want it to be islamic so much?

Fair enough. Bad mark to the BBC then!

It's common practice to use quotation marks in headlines, it means they are quoting a source such as the police or the RAF representative. It's a common misconception that it means it is inferring it is not to be taken literally.

Are you suggesting that Police should call it out as terrorism despite their not being enough evidence to do so? Perhaps the police should do this in other situations too.

Personally i am glad that the police's version of beyond reasonable doubt is stricter than yours.

Still, may as well leap to conclusions to fit the narrative.

What do you think might have been the three most likely reasons behind this failed kidnap attempt?

Well if nothing else, this failed attempt will make servicemen more aware of the kidnap threat and they'll jog in pairs or groups rather than alone.

It's not just servicemen & women. Government staff, security services personnel, and police officers (amongst others, no doubt) have all been advised to watch their backs, not to travel to & from work in uniform or with any sort of identification on display etc.

A French police officer was stabbed to death outside his own home last month, after which the attacker- who proclaimed allegiance to IS, entered his house and murdered his partner in front of their three year old son.

And what a sad state of affairs. When on combat duty one would expect combat tactics to prevail. But when going for a jog in England? I know you don't mean it like that, but acquiescence of this is not very different from acquiescence that young women should avoid wearing short skirts to minimise risk of sexual assault (remember Attila's 'contributary negligence' poem of 30 years ago?). I expect to see British servicemen and women safe on our streets, in or out of uniform. The fact they clearly aren't is worrying and depressing.

Nothing changes.British servicemen were at risk of Irish terrorism through the 70's and 80's and were frequently warned about personal security.A very worrying aspect of this case is that he was wearing headphones-a very stupid thing to do in a non-secure environment.

Stupid is a bit OTT.

Personally I have no desire for it to be Islamic. I would prefer that Islam were in a more peaceful phase as it has been frequently. But alas it is driven and riven ATM. It has a force which is difficult to withstand particularly when our leaders have made things so much worse in Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan. When Islamic terrorists kill people, I blame Islamic terrorists, not the millions of ordinary Muslims.

There is a big reluctance by yourself and some others on here to accept that many of these acts are carried out by fundamentalist Muslims. This denial will not help you or your family or your neighbour if they are unfortunate enough to be caught up in trouble. Yes people jump to conclusions but people are also not as stupid as you think. If threats are made against our forces at home and two middle eastern men try to kidnap one with a knife and a car at hand, one doesn't have to be Sherlock Holmes to conclude the likely motivations of the men.

My waiting for further evidence of the motives of the two kidnappers does not make an ounce of difference to the safety of my family or neighbours. It i were involved in some way or another i would hope the police follow procedure and do not jump to any conclusions while undertaking their investigations as this kind of thinking can derail detective work.

Fair play to you for only blaming islamic terrorist and not Islam as a whole, i am exactly the same (and i have no reluctance to accept anything that is based on evidence provided). It is interesting that in your second sentence you say "I would prefer that Islam were in a more peaceful phase" rather than "I would prefer that certain sections of Islam were in a more peaceful phase". These lines are easily blurred and this is causing problem for ordinary muslims who are abused or attacked in revenge for terrorist attacks (these threads are always littered with examples of this lack of distinction). To me this is an important part of the problem as it has been documented that people have turned to extremism because they have felt like the enemy of the country they live in because of their religion.
