It feels weird that only last week I submitted my essay on the Yugoslavian conflict and the subsequent war crimes. It's a shame Milosevic never got to suffer life behind bars in a hell hole of a prison.

Whoosh yourself.

There is no mention of, or reference to, Adam Johnson in "Would he have got such a harsh sentence if he wasn't a famous politician?"

No whoosh your damn self, have a read of the AJ thread there are multiple posts that seriously argue that he wouldn't have got 6 years if he wasnt a famous footballer.

I did my dissertation on the subject of mass atrocities, truly horrific times. Have you ever read the transcripts of some of the radio transmissions during the genocide? They made my blood run cold, horrifying.

There's Mladic to come though. Can't see him sending much time in his own home

No, the whoosh is definitely your's. There is no requirement to read another thread before replying to a post on this one, and the OP to which I replied made no reference to any other thread, or any other person except Karadzic. Frankly I have no interest in discussing AJ, or in reading what has been written on the multiple threads about him.

Try reading the post I replied to.

Because you did not get a joke, does not mean that a joke did not take place.

Because you do not pay attention to what was actually said, that makes fatuous 'whoosh' look very silly. Besides, if you think comparing Karadzic and AJ is a joke ............................ well, words fail me. This 'conversation' is at an end.

I did my dissertation on the clash between the need for justice and the needs of peace. Do you negotiate with monsters like Milosevic and Karadzic in order to achieve peace (often involving escape from justice) or do you have nothing to do with them. NATO troops had loads of chances to arrest Karadzic and Mladic but passed by on the other side in order not to upset the Serbs once a peace deal had been agreed. Interestingly it was probably only Serbia's wish to join the EU that encouraged them to give them up. One up for the EU! In today's world there is the same dilemma over Assad

Seems nuts to think how long this has taken.

These atrocities took place a long time ago now and the families of the Bosnians who suffered have had a VERY long wait for any attempt at justice to be served.

The whole Balkan conflict of the 90s is an absolute embarrassment to Europe and the civilised world. We let it go on under our noses and no amount of sentencing will ever make up for the fact that action should have been taken far sooner.

Serbia is a complete mess now and as a nation really has a chip on its shoulder over how the dissolution of Yugoslavia affected them. There will be many in Belgrade bitter at this sentence and I don't think we've heard the last of them as aggressors, not by a long shot.

You know you can still walk round downtown Belgrade and come across bombed out buildings, like the below, left over from the air strikes when NATO finally took action. They claim they can't afford to clean it up but I think most people recognise it as a propaganda stunt and with such big obvious examples of the damage your nation has suffered at the hands of the west in plain sight like this, you can't help but think that it's only a matter of time before this poor and underdeveloped country starts kicking off again.

I think he got away quite lightly, Saddam Hussein got hung for less.
