It was set in Newtown - which was literally a new town, like Skelmersdale and Speke, built to replace the slums and bomb damaged houses of Liverpool, and re-house their inhabitants. Pure scouse, much more culturally linked to Liverpool than nearby St. Helens.

Skelmersdale is near Wigan - even stronger rugby league territory.

Besides, there's nothing stopping people like both sports; when I lived in Bradford, I'd go to watch City one week and Northern the next.

Skelmersdale United were a good (non league) football team in the late 50s and 60s. 75000 watched them play in the FA Amateur Cup final at Wembley!

I do accept that some people will watch more than one sport though.

Cheshire Cat

The most curious thing..
He was on the telly box only last night in an old black and white repeat of something I have promptly fogotten.

Newtown was Kirkby which isn't in Liverpool (although it might as well be). Kirkby was in Lancashire until it became part of Knowsley.

RIP to him. Because of where it was filmed, is this why the z cars theme is played at goodison?

The Z Cars theme is an old Liverpool folk song called Johnny Todd. I'm not an Everton so I don't how long they've been using the music and whether it pre-dates Z Cars

This has always intrigued me, a friend of mine told me that in days gone by the nickname (unofficial) of Bradford Northern was ‘the steampigs’. Apparently because the changing rooms were at the top of the Odsal Stadium terracing the players, after a match in horrible, cold and wet conditions, would have to climb up the steps, through the spectators, swathed in vapours of sweaty mist. One fan shouted out “Ayup! Here come the steampigs!”

Is this true, or complete bollocks? Either way, what a fabulous description. :drink::D

I think Everton took it up in response to Z Cars. The sing is old, but the theme tune was produced for the series, so wouldn't have been available in that format pre Z Cars.
