They're not even the first team in the League of Ireland to go out of business this off-season and the other one actually *is* a UK club. Derry City went bust and have been replaced by another team that managed to buy the name off the liquidators.

Cork have also been replaced by another team who haven't managed to get the name / shirt designs, etc. Both them and Derry rented their stadia so the new clubs are renting the same grounds, and have managed to get in to the spare places in Division One left by the teams promoted to fill their gaps in the Premier.

Once again, the "big" teams get to f*** around, spend money they don't have and barely get punished when it all goes boom. The clubs that don't live beyond their means generally don't have a hope of competing.

Bangor went for it last season, and it all went wrong for them, not enough revenue meant they had to basically give up halfway through the Premiership season, sold most of their players and were relegated. They couldn't afford to pay the "license" for being members of the Irish Premiership for the 2009/10 season. When you look at it, throughout that division, crowds of less than a thousand are the norm, and the board effectively paying to keep the club afloat, wages, staff, rents etc. If you have a wealthy board you can keep going, if your board are not multi millionaires, then you don't really stand a chance. And when you look at it, that is exaclty how football at all levels seems to work in the UK these days, and in Ireland by the sounds of it.

"The board" of a majority of LOI clubs are bog standard fans - for instance the league champions are a Members Club and second place are a fans COOP, as are many others. A few are unlisted PLCs, one is majoirty owned by the local council and another is owned by a university!.

My domestic team (Finn Harps) are a fans COOP also, so the board is made up of any of us shareholders stupid enough to go forward. This means there is basically NO way for most clubs to get megabucks off their board. Cork were one of the few clubs let owned by an apparently rich businessman as it happens.

There is a salary cap set to a % of turnover but its appalingly poorly enforced, which is how clubs like end up with massive debts and unpaid Revenue bills. The general state of finances in the league can be summed up by looking at Galway United's CEO - Nick Leeson. Yes, that one.

What do you mean barely get punished? the club has been dissolved and FORAS are looking at re-starting city with no cash, no players, but a rented stadium and hopefully a still-loyal fanbase. Not exact Real Madrid's Government funding is it?

The club got screwed by poor management by the supposed "Rich" Businessman, end of.

Dissolved, despite considerable efforts by fans to save the club , due to non-payment of VAT, PAYE & PRSI to Revenue by the chairman/owner. Who also didn't pay staff/players/electricity bills/club doctor/ground rent etc etc etc etc. Think Archer/B*ll*tti (sorry) and you get the idea.

Good luck to Cork City Foras Co-Op owned/run by fans.

Well I mentioned a) because I had a point to make about b) which ACTUALLY is fairly significant.

Why don't you do a quick poll of Cork City fans and ask them if they consider themselves British?

Being part of the British Isles does not necessarily make you British.

Namibia is in South Africa but Namibians AREN'T South African.

The reason I brought it up is that it's quite a bone of contention and it won't win you many friends in the Emerald Isle if you call the locals British. It's a little bit like telling everyone in Derry that they've got the name wrong

Well said. Some of the plonkers on here would be miffed if I said England is part of France - which is ridiculous. Just as ridiculous as saying EIRE is part of the UK. The REPUBLIC of Ireland (the clue is in the name).
