Hello ??? Qatar unsustainable? It has the 2nd biggest gas reserve in the world (funnily enough after Russia) ! . It is finding more. Financially they could blow us out of the water . The money they spent on the Asia games two years ago was frightening, with quite amazing stadiums . It will still be a shit World Cup there, as the only really populated place is Doha . (Officially described as the most boring city in the world). The only thing in meltdown will be the football supporters trying to get around .... 45- 50 c and massive humidity. Once inside the stadiums all will be ok.....they will be roofed and air conditioned ! The last thing that Qater is, is unsustainable .
Good points, but I'd have though that the last Qatar is, is an approriate place to hold the World Cup, sutainable as it might be.

Such a poor decision. Not questioning they will throw enough qatari riyals at it but the country is too small and too forking hot and humid.

The only way this is going to work is if it was held between Nov and Mar and shared with the UAE (and maybe Bahrain too). Arab state oneupmanship would suggest that this wouldn't happen anyway.

Disaster waiting to happen.

They don't even have their own f***ing football league!!!

Too f***ing hot, too f***ing ideological and impossible to get a pint. f***ing disgraceful world cup!

Inetersting point re the fact that Qatar will be a "Dry" world cup. Is there not normally at least one alcoholic beverage in the main sponsors of each world cup? There's a money making opportunity squandered!! Still at least we will be spared the debacle of Dutch fans being ejected from stadiums for wearing their teams colours!!

I think you may be missing the point here FIFA don't give a damn about the fans turning up in qatar thats doesnt fill their money pot as much as the TV rights will. This is the same perversion of the world cup as we have seen to our top league over the past years with the Premiershite and Sky TV.

This world cup will be focused on the media delivery of games not the paying fans. Although I am dissappionted and sickened by the FIFA approach I can't help notice the irony of the situation where the country (us) that changed the face of football from a game for the common man to the prawn sannie brigade and TV revenue have now been screwed by moneygrabbers and media deals!

I know several people who have been out there for work and haven't ever heard anything positive about the place from any of them.

Someone recently told me - not sure if it's true - that every Qatari citizen is given £50000 per year by the Government. Therefore, it's only immigrants that will lift a finger to do anything. Seems like the World Cup will now just be another plaything for the idle rich. There'll be none of the enthusiasm of South Africa sadly.

Actually, it looks like the £50k isn't true - but they do get land and interest free loans. The line about their lack of enthusiasm still applies though!

The line about their lack of enthusiasm still applies though!

Although there are obvious potential problems I think it's a bit ignorant to question their enthusiam. Throughout the middle east there's huge passion for football. The fact that they don't have a high quality domestic league will only serve to heighten their enthuasiam for the World Cup in Qatar.

I was watching CNN when the decision was made and they had a live broadcast from a city in all the bidding nations. There were huge crowds in the streets of Doha awaiting the decision and they seemed very happy when the result came in.

Let's wait and see- maybe the Qatari's will prove us all wrong and deliver a tournament to remember. I seem to recall a lot of scaremongering and moaning prior to South Africa.

As far as Russia is concerned it would seem quite appropriate to award the World Cup where organised crime and corruption are so prolific. Of course I an sure all the countries with coloured players will delight in the abuse they will get from more than a small minority of fans,

Well done again f***ing Idiots For Avarice.

Do you remember a few years ago when Beckham got a knock in a qualifier and although he played on he realised he wasn't going to be fit for the next game (In a couple of days). He was a booking away from a 1 game ban so he deliberatly got himself a yellow card. He then admitted that that was what he had done. What's the relevance I hear you ask! Well Herr Blatter had a hissy fit if I remember and had a right go at Beckham. Interestingly that was the same weekend that it was reported that Aragones had called Thierry Henry a "Black Bastard". It wasn't until later in the week when Blatter realised that the whole world was up in arms that he criticised Aragones. I think the that demonstrates his views on Racism in football!

Oh come on! Surely you don't begrudge those poor FIFA executives their massive payout after tall the hard work they did filling in their voting slips! They had a bloody hard time of it travelling round the world being wined and dined too...........

With a population no bigger than Birmingham I suspect that Qatar will have to pay the Indians & Phillipines to fill their stadiums.

Looking at the 200+ FIFA nations this country is won of the smallest, lowest populations, inhospitable playing conditions, undeveloped quality league - but oh yes very rich to pay for votes. Panorama will have a field day.

As a Doha resident, can you give us your view? Will it be the epic catastophe that many on here are expecting?

As long as the World Cup is more exciting that the QSL League !

Qatar is a hugely ambitous and dynamic country with enormous wealth and ability to get things done. Very little stands in their way , and I do not doubt their ability to deliver the WC , and on time. The Stadiums will be built , and then donated to other countries in the area. Hopfeully this is the legacy that FIFA talks off . There will be enough Hotel rooms and places to eat and things to do .

The country in 12 years will have evolved and changed again from what it is today . Who would have thought 12 years that BHA would be building and moving to Falmer ?

I have been here 2 years now , I work with Qatari's and with people from all over the world ( They all support Manure ! ).
They follow the Premiership , Italian and Spanish football in great depth and with a great passion. Last month they hosted Argentina v Brazil and in January the country will host the Asian Champions League - the same format as the Euro Championship.

There are strict laws here to be obeyed ref Alcohol etc , but rumours abound during the WC there will be areas where Fans can relax and have a beer and not be subject to these rules . But even now 12 years out you will need to obey the countries rules , they will be strictly enforced , without argument.

It is described as the most boring city in the world , but I enjoy it , it is incredibly safe , I can eat a meal from every continent in the world , fill my car for a £5 , and then if I want go to many different places and enjoy a beer ranging from a £5 - £25 depending on where I go. Go to many cafes and watch a football match from all corners of the world .

Qatari's can be described as "aloof " but make sure that you are dealing with a Qatari , plenty of others dress like them to seek higher positions in Social circles . They grow up in different world to us , they are protected and nurtued by the State because the State wants them to stay here , they get big benefits , land and basically they pick the job they want in which particular State Run Industry they want. They are highly educated , and speak several languges . There first car is likely to be German and fast , before they progress to the weapon of choice the Land Cruiser ! They like things to happen there and then , that is what the expats are here for , we make it happen . The WC here will provide work for many from all around the world .

The whole world seems to have written them off as not being up to it , and that they some how didnt win by fair means , but they did win and in 12 years time the eyes of the world will be on here , and I hope that most will like what they see . There are issues if you scratch beneath the surface , but there is in every country including the UK .

Just my 5 Riyal's worth , trying to give a balanced view .

I don't think it's a question of can they host the tournament adequately or even very well, it's the question of who deserves it and how the decision was arrived at. You can't say Russia don't deserve it, they are a nation with a decent enough footballing history and culture, but how exactly did they win the vote? But how have Qatar earned it without any meaningful football history to speak of? Purely on the basis of future promises, the question is whether that is a satisfactory basis for awarding the tournament. I think the Aussies and Americans have far more reason to be upset than we do.
