As we have a baby-sitter tomorrow, Mrs Gwylan and I are going for a night out and fancy going to Lewes rather than Brighton.

I obviously fancy a few Harveys but what's the best pub in Lewes for a decent glass of wine? Mrs G is a red wine drinker and wants something better than house red.

And what's the best pub for decent bar snacks/meals? I don't want to eat in restaurant but if a pub does decent scran then I'll be interested.

I know those are two different things, I'd be happy with one pub or two. Any ideas?

IMO Lewes Arms for both drink and food. A bit small granted but equally quaint... Lacks atmosphere a bit but good company... No music, no pool tables and no games machines! and most importantly no screaming kids!

I quote like the John Harvey Tavern and The Gardeners Arms, down Cliffe High Street, just after the river.

EDIT: The Dorset does good food and beer, but not been in there in an evening for a while.

I love the JHT but wasn't sure whether the wine would be good there

The snowdrop changed hands a while ago. It's more of a bistro type pub now. Very good food and Harvey's, can't help with the wine list though! May be worth calling them 1st to book as they get very busy!

It depends what sort of a night out you want... A couple of pints and food with the Mrs, it's ideal!

If you don`t want any of the above are you not better off staying in and watching the telly

:lol::lol:

I think I passed 18 a long time ago

I do like the Lewes Arms but we've been there a few times and fancy a change

No probs... I ate in the Snowy and that was good... Then it's a five min walk to Gardeners and JHT

You can take your pick....Snowdrop, Elephant and castle, Volunteer, John harveys, Lansdown or Dorset arms. of course, you could have a few beers in any of the above and then head for The Spice Merchants Indian eatery...top notch grub.

i dont know if its changed, but many Lewes pubs on a Friday/Saturday were pretty dodgy, with many locals looking to get lashed and have a fight. but with several calmer pubs or "old men pubs".

the Brewers Arms was always a good middle ground, rowdy without trouble. no doubt they are all fine now... maybe just a case of dont be around at closing time.

Snowdrop for food also do Harveys and Dark Star
John Harvey Tavern also does good food/snacks but always busy.

Best route from the station: John Harvey , Gardeners , Snowdrop for food , then back to Lewes Arms.
