BRIGHTON and Hove Albion supporters have defended John Prescott after he was accused of compromising any future Falmer decision by accepting hospitality from the club.

The Deputy Prime Minister has been accused of conduct unbecoming a minister after he was a guest of the Seagulls while his planning permission for their new stadium is still being contested.

Norman Baker, MP for Lewes, has written to Prime Minister Tony Blair urging him to strip Prescott of his decision-making powers in the case.

The Argus reported that Mr Prescott had attended an Albion match, watching his team Hull lose 2-1 on December 16 - eight days after Lewes District Council lodged an appeal against the decision in the High Court.

Mr Baker said it was "outrageous" the Deputy Prime Minister had attended the match before dining in the boardroom with chairman Dick Knight and directors of both clubs.

But Paul Samrah, of the Falmer for All Campaign, said: "Mr Prescott is the member for Hull East and his constituency team was playing in a city he was visiting on official business. He was entertained as any other visiting guest would be entertained.

"Mr Baker should be more concerned about the prospect of significant legal costs when the appeal is thrown out rather than trying to find allegations of impropriety and scoring points."

Mr Prescott granted planning permission on October 27 for a new 22,000-seat home for Albion at Falmer.

Lewes District Council served papers on December 8 to argue Mr Prescott had made a number of errors in planning law.

If the appeal is successful, the case would be referred back to Mr Prescott for reconsideration in his role as the final arbiter in planning disputes.

After the Brighton v Hull match at Withdean Stadium, Mr Prescott received a standing ovation from fans and posed for photos with campaigners for the move to Falmer.

Mr Baker, who has just returned from major surgery after waking up one morning and finding he had women's genitals, said: "The whole thing is outrageous. If a local councillor behaved in this way, taking hospitality while a case is live, he could be barred from office under the rules established by the Office for the Deputy Prime Minister.

"I have written to the Prime Minister demanding that Mr Prescott be removed from the case.

"If the council succeeds in court, it should be another minister that considers the case, because he has compromised his position."

A spokesman for the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister stressed that Mr Prescott had gone to the December 16 match purely in order to watch his home team play, and had not gone to the site of the new stadium during his visit.

Martin Perry, Albion's chief executive, said Mr Prescott had not even sat at the same table as the club's directors.

On page 14 of todays Argus there is an article about the loss of green belt land in the South. It ends with;
"Mr Prescott decided to allow a stadium to be built at Falmer in an area of outstanding natural beauty. The site is in the proposed South Downs National Park area."
Yet more bending of the facts.

Norman Baker and the Nimby's will probably take the Argus to court next for printing too much pro-falmer stuff.

Norman Baker should lose his job for lying and being a CRAP MP.
We should all write to Charles wimp Kennedy complaining about Norman Baker.

John Prescott has done nothing illegal, where on the other side LDC have gone against the wishes of the taxpayers, which is wrong.

It's not even bending the facts, it's simply not true.

The report into the proposed South Downs National Park isn't due to be published until October this year, so no-one knows at this precise moment where the boundary is going to be.

I can't believe what a weasel Norman Baker is (no disrespect intended to the weasel population).

Whatever happened to "I will accept the result of the decision once it's made"??

Bitter, twisted old man.

I can see twenty years down the line, the stadium's finally been built, and Dick Knight bumps into John Prescott's wife in Tesco Express in Regent Street, London. Baker will still be firing off letters to all and sundry complaining about the impropriety of it.

When is it going to end??

What a stain on the sheets of humanity this bloke is.

Whoopppeee dooooo, he's sent a letter to Mr Blair asking him to remove Prescott from the case.

As if that's gonna happen, as I can't see Blair undermining his own deputy, in fact he will just back him up as if he doesn't, it will make Blair, Prescott and the whole of the Labour party look stupid.

Perhaps we should all write letters to Blair pointing out the fact that the weasel Baker sees fit to spend tax payers money irresponsibly, yet feels it necesary to question the decision of the Deputy Prime Minister :shootself :shootself

I might be missing the point but now that the only way the process can be extended is through the judicary, isn't Prescott's role ended anyway ?

I don't want to stand up for Baker as I cannot stand the man but it isn't him spending our council tax money but LDC.
It doesn't make him any less of a hypocrite though.

If the High Court agrees with any of the issues LDC are challenging the decision with, the matter is referred back to Prescott for consideration.

Having read the press release into the nature of Lewes' challenge, even if all their points were referred back to him, he would almost certainly still grant permission.

It is highly likely that the Council, fellow Lib Dems, have had their arms bent around their backs to undertake this action. Or put another way, if you want a political career back me!

You've got to think that Knight and Prescott appearing all smiles in front of the assemled media wa a pretty stupid situation which SHOULD have been avoided at all costs. Yes we should have provided the same hospitality that any other visitors in his position would be given but to eat with the board?

Irresponsible.

No chance. Baker was as surprised as we were when the council took this action.

Pissed off is more like it.

He felt that Lewes DC could have lost this with dignity, and worked closely with the Albion in securing minimum distruption to the environment - something most would want. But now, he believes the same as us, they are wasting money and losing face. It could possibly, by association, cost him a few votes at the next General Election.

However, he can't be seen to air those sentiments. Since Thatcher, politicians aren't for turning, remember.

Norman Baker is a prize wanker, we all know that. But I do think that both Prescott and our board were a little foolish in having this get-together when the Falmer issue is still so sensitive.

If Prezza is forced to reconsider the Falmer result the likelihood is that he will back it, but the NIMBYs will cry foul play cos he's seen - first hand - just how shit Withdean hospitality is.

Why give the inbred tossers further ammunition? I do think we may have shot ourselves in the foot here.
