Premier League ambition

I finally got round to watching last nights Match of the Day. What an absolute belter. I have absolutely no connection to Manchester City and the way they have spent their way to the top asks all sorts of questions about the direction of the modern game but I wish I could have been there for that finale. Those that were will never forget their day. A slice of fried gold.

Now here's a question. The path to the Premiership contains many dangers. The risk of spending the club into oblivion to reach the promised land is one. The risk of being nothing more than perpetual fodder for the big boys is another. Then there is the risk of becoming nothing more than a corporate behemoth and seeing the link to the local community severed.

But...

When you look at the last Premier League season, can you honestly be rational enough to say that we should be happy where we are, playing pretty stuff in a spanking new ground and punching above our historic weight?

For my part, I can't be that rational. Rationality seldom gets a look in where football support is concerned anyway. Despite all of the risks, I would love to see us up there having a crack at the big boys, even in the full knowledge that we might get the mother of all pastings.

I suspect I'm in a comfortable majority but what do you all reckon. Stick or twist?

I, like you would love to see us in the top flight and in a couple of seasons we may be in a position to do so. We proved this season that on our day we can beat top flight clubs both at home and away BUT we also saw that we could get spanked by Liverpool.

As I said, in a few seasons time I would love to see us up there

It's when you stop looking forward that you end up going backwards as everyone else around you has left you behind.

Can you imagine playing City now with the endless millions backing them. Would not be impossible to compete with them but in my opinion even the "big boys" (United,Arsenal,Chelsea ect ) will be playing catch-up every season and the gap will just grow and grow with the bottomless pit of money and sky's the limit pay structure!

Swansea & Norwich have prooved this season that you don't have to bankrupt yourself to make & survive in the premier league.
Q.P.R who won the championship last season decided to throw money at staying in the premier league & servived by the skin or their teeth.
We can make it by living to our means

I really struggle getting too excited about the premier league even after the final day goings on. Its really odd when our obvious ambition is to get into the premier league that on the whole I can't be arsed with it all. The ridiculous amount of money spent on the top three or four teams, the attitude of lots of big money players and the whole over hyped media machine. I love championship football, lots of big clubs with big histories, passionate fans and some great football where on the day anybody can beat anybody. I would love us to win the league next year, beating everyone along the way and playing great attacking football, but actually being in the premier league playing man utd or chelsea does not interest me that much. A strange attitude I guess and maybe I might feel different when we get there :)

To be honest I think I would be a lot happier if the top 4 Premiership clubs cleared off to the Pangalactic Superleague or whatever and left a "Premier" division that was more competitive. Good though it was to see someone new win the title it I didn't really get a "well done plucky underdogs" feeling like I used to get in the days when unfashionable clubs could actually win things (think Wimbledon v Liverpool FA Cup),
