He didn't have a "severe" virus.

The evidence your honor:

1) He was reported as being ill at Christmas

2) He was sick on the pitch on NYD (and another game I think)

3) He never looked like the same player after that.

You don't need to be the love child of Poirot and Miss Marple to come to the conclusion that something wasn't quite right.

Please can you explain what caused him to be sick on the pitch. If you believe that Hughton wouldn't play someone who wasn't 100%, please explain how it happened.

No point. Obviously he was sick because he had a severe virus that didn't clear up for the next 6 months. And Hughton didn't notice or didn't care.
