I’m fairly sure that the highest consideration in putting together a program of friendlies to best prepare the squad for the season, is not the relative appeal to away fans.

This. It's supposed to be a final fine tuning of pre-season training in a more competitive environment for both clubs involved. It's not supposed to be a fans jolly

We played Rangers (a) in a pre season friendly in July 2021.

Southampton is underwhelming, we just played them twice in a season. Why not Portsmouth instead?

Maybe Wolfsburg at home has anything to do with an impending signing of Patrick Wimmer?

Obv we played Charlton(a) in Dec 2022 in the Carabao Cup. I think we last played Saints (h) in a friendly was in Aug 2014 . Sami era Albion and we lost 3-1.
