Phew, that was a thread and a half.
I am amazed at the number of perfect or near perfect drivers we have on NSC, (even the ones that don’t drive😉)
I hope Mellotron manages to keep his licence and so his job and avoids family strife, but, in future, keeps a better look out for speed limits and the ‘state of play’ on his licence.
PS. No, I don’t have any points on my licence, but did so during my working life, that involved a lot of mileage, often on unfamiliar roads. Back in the day, cars were generally not so well equipped with all the warning gadgets either.

Here in Wales all 30mph limits reduced to 20mph a couple of years back, although a lot have since reverted to 30mph as local councils can decide this.

I have however seen comments on Facebook etc from people that thought Wales had introduced a blanket 20mph limit on all roads and a refusing to visit based on that 😂.

Driving is all about considering the conditions. I drive over speed limit on motor ways when they are quite and I know there are no cameras. When busy and conditions are poor would more than likely drive under limit. I often think country roads with no cameras are the most dangerous and often limit is too high.
Biggest danger I see is tailgating and driver who as soon as they indicate feel they have a right to come out. Apart from speeding i would think nobody gets done for bad driving which is a pity.

I’ve always wondered if it’s possible for a limiter to be fitted which links up somehow to a sat nav, to cap the top speed of the vehicle to whatever the speed limit is on that particular road.
I am sure the 'sat nav' providers could build in the speed limits so you wouldn't need a limiter just the voice telling you you are over the speed limit

You can set Waze to alert you - see below. I’ve got it set at 5% - so I would get an audible alert if I was going 32 in a 30.

I drive a Renault Scenic e-Tech. One of the driver assist modes is just that. It knows speed limits from sat nav, but also has a camera which recognises additional speed signs. It then drives me at the speed limit (slowing for cars in front). Very relaxing way to drive and avoids the danger of speeding fines.

I can see a time where cars automatically adjust to speed limits, I’ve recently moved to all electric and I’m blown away by how clever the technology is, when driving in cruise control even temporary signs seem to be picked up and the speed adjusts accordingly, as time moves on it wouldn’t be a bad thing if the car limited speed purely for the safety of others.

This was on the Kingsway this morning, a 30mph road. I wonder what speed they were doing to take out the lamp post to such an extent. Drive safely, everyone. For all the debate about speed limits and the safety of vehicles, stopping distances etc - the reality is that cars will crash and this is what can happen when they do.

Hopefully the driver is ok and the damage is mostly the vehicle doing excellent work protecting the passengers.

It's not even new technology - my 10 year old Ford has it too.

It's actually now mandatory for new cars, it seems: https://www.autotrader.co.uk/content/news/mandatory-speed-limiters-on-eu-cars-from-2024

Yes. I have rented quite a few cars in the UK and EU in the last couple of years. They've all had the function to read speed limits and alert you if you are speeding. They're not perfect though. The MG I had in the UK a couple of weeks ago kept reading speed signs on slip roads and it would start beeping at me with a 40 limit when I was clearly still on the motorway. For that reason, I wouldn't trust it to actually set the speed of the car, but it is nice to have the speed limit on the display.

For full disclosure, I only passed my test in my late 20s, never needed a car up until this point. As previously mentioned I only drove for 2 years and picked up 2 speeding tickets quite early into my driving career, consectutive days in the exact same place at the bottom of a big hill in Wycombe. Whilst I felt I was taking care with my speed, from this moment onwards I took extra care.

A good idea in theory but if I’m on a motorway and about to squeezed by a lorry, I’d like to know I could accelerate my way out of the situation even if it meant briefly exceeding 70mph

The Facts. Speed is one of the main causes of fatal road collisions. 3,000 people a year are killed or seriously injured in speed-related crashes. A pedestrian hit by a car at 40mph is four times more likely to die than one hit at 30mph.

I hope you get banned, and spend the time you are banned thinking about how you will make sure you are not such a risk on the road when you get your licence back.

And maybe look into ways to help you be less stressed and sleep deprived in the future if this is your way of justification to yourself.

Maybe look into the European Framework Goals for Driver Education.

Argus spectacularly missing the main story .... all elevations of the block of flats are leaning outwards to the point of collapse.
