Yeah…think I might be in a bit of trouble.

Stupidly turned down a course last time as I swore I only had 3 points prior - really should’ve checked before responding.

I do wonder if I can plead mitigating circumstances and somehow go on a course instead, as it would really make things incredibly difficult for us as a family, and near impossible for my job - I’m constantly out seeing clients face to face, many of whom are unable/unwilling to do remote meetings.

Any and all (helpful, constructive…) advice massively welcomed! There are solicitors etc online suggesting they can help me out (I’m guessing no win no fee etc), but I don’t know if worth exploring?

for context - how many points do you actually have on your license? and how fast do you think (or know) you were going, and what was the limit on that stretch of road?

Somebody did share an article on here the other day about the number of drivers with 12 points and not banned. I think the reason is typically they need to drive for their job.

Don’t have any personal experience of this but definitely worth looking into.

You'd have to go some for an all out ban if you only had three points previously, or have you now got 6 pending another ticket...? I guess the key ingredient is - were you WAY over the limit..?. which might mean you're in for a pretty big fine, but I'd be surprised if you can't successfully appeal a ban...

I'd be surprised if you've got 6 points that this one will result in a ban... amazed even.

I've got three, basically I now drive everywhere at the limit simply not worth the risk for me as (like yourself) my job would be impossible to do if I ever lost my licence.

Not proud of it, but I had a similar issue a few years ago. I pleaded guilty but begged to not be disqualified due to the impact it’d have on my work, staff and clients.

I’d just accumulated too many 3 pointers.

Most courts won’t want to see you out of work.
I wasn’t banned (thankfully) but was given 3 points to total 12 and no ban due to ‘exceptional circumstances’.

Doubt any solicitors will be ‘no win, no fee’ - that only usually applies if your seeking some kind of compensation and they take a %
How many points do you have already and how fast were you going vs the limit this time ?

To clarify - I have 9 points and this would tip me over to 12. I turned down the course as I thought I had zero points still in licence or 3 at most, not 6.

Thank you for posting this - this basically my situation, so I can only hope for leniency.

9 - out atm but will confirm - all 4 instances have been manned equipment (ie people catching you out).

I will check the speed and post, I have a feeling it was doing around 50 on a stretch of motorway that was temporarily dropped to 40 or something similar.

I got 6 points last year after an insurance f-up. Without going into the nitty gritty, I’ve never been so aware of my speed as now, to the point that I put my limiter on every time I enter a new speed limit. It’s actually dangerous, to be honest, but seeing 6 points on my license (the first I’d had) shocked me into slowing down. So it amazes me to see someone with 4x 3 pointers for the same thing 😂

Got you... that's not good... Although, given that you've accumulated lots of 'minor' speeding penalties... and I'm guessing you drive lots... well, yeah let's hope commonsense prevails and you can continue to work... fine might be hefty though...

Good luck with it, having something like this hanging over you SUCKS and you come across like a good bloke... I guess what I'm getting at is, you don't really deserve to have the book chucked at you and hopefully you won't... I reckon being very contrite might help your cause.

Yep, if a ban looks likely (which, given you have 9 points already - and I have no idea how you lost track of that), your best bet is to own-up, plead for leniency, dress smartly, and hope for a reasonable judge.
I do wish you well, but please do slow down - for everyone's sake, not just to save your license.

To clarify, I really am not a boy racer, just incredibly stressed and sleep deprived.

No excuse for it obviously, and agreed clearly more care and attention is needed. But I didn’t want you to get the wrong idea.

You're too old to be a boy racer...I think! :) Seriously though, I hope for the reasons stated that you are shown leniency, but bear in mind that if you are, they won't be doing it again.

Never ceases to amaze me how being caught speeding illicits so much sympathy from so many. So much so in fact, that's it's invariably the fault of the 'sneaky' people who caught you in the act.

Speeding really has been normalised, hasn't it. :(

No surprises really I suppose, in a car centric culture.

How can a ban be an effective deterrent for breaking the law when all you have to do is plead exceptional circumstances because you use a car a lot and they agree not to ban you?!

Probably a. Unpopular opinion but they should just say tough luck, you were told the consequences when you were given your license and if you need to drive for work then that should be a reason for you to be more careful not a reason why other road users should have to accept that more selfish poor drivers are allowed to use the road without the same consequences as everyone else
