Positive Coppell Thread

Not expecting much here but as the anti's have their own vitriolic thread, let me start a Thank You and Good Luck Steve thread.

I can understand the vitriole to a degree but he has to do what he thinks is best for him and his family. He made a very fair point that if he said no and we don't get Falmer, he is effectively out of a job in the summer. (And yes, I know that it was his fault he only had a one year contract)

You can count the number of managers who stay loyal to a club on the fingers of one hand (Gradi, Curbishley etc.) and I never expected this from Coppell. Like Adams, he's been got rid of unfairly a few times at other clubs so it's only right he looks after himself. He's going to what he sees as a more secure job with better prospects - i.e. he won't have to beg steal or borrow players but can buy players of the quality of Goater and Sidwell.

If you were manager of say Swindon and the Norwich job come along, how many of you, hand on heart would turn it down? Higher division, better ground and more money to spend.

We all expect players and managers to stay loyal but to most, it's not their club. They use clubs the same way as we use companies to further our careers. Someone the other day said that they had turned down a job with better pay because they were happy where they were. But what if your current job could disappear in a year due to the decision of someone who has nothing to do with the company? Wouldn't the new job look more enticing.

I'm unhappy he's gone, not happy with Madjeski (Stuck to the technicalities of his "no poaching" but not the morals) and disillusioned with the football world in general. But, I understand his reasons and would probably have done the same thing in his position. So I Say :-

Good Luck Steve and thanks.

of course he's done a brilliant job for us, but that's why we're football fans, we're by our very nature horribly subjective.

So I will happily thank him for everything, but don't expect me to wish him luck.

I honestly hope Reading get relegated and the town itself gets hit by seven plagues of doom.

I wasn't expecting many people to wish him good luck. I'm starting to think I'm getting old because my first thought is still subjective but then I start seeing both sides. :nono:

what i cant understand is why does Sc think he would be out of a job at the end of the season even tho he has only signed a one year contract..sure dk would offer him a longer one ?

Well said. I for one would prefer to continue disliking Taylor!

You can do both surely?

As much as I dislike Taylor, he did at least leave us at the end of the season which gave DK all summer to look around and find, erm? Tinslehead.

Coppell on the other hand has left us completely fcuked up a quarter of the way through our season using some bollocks of an excuse. As has been said elsewhere-he knew the situation with our stadium plans when he signed his contract after waiting around for his phone to ring (which it didn't).

Sorry-just don't share your sentiments.

What has Steve Coppell ever done for us.
He gets us relegated, sells our most prized asset, then brings in a 5 foot 4" striker who couldn't hit a barn door last season,
(ok so that one backfired on him a bit)
This season is going badly for him as we are currently top of the league so he is Fu**ing off.
Not that I believe a word of what I have written but it does make you think :lolol:

Good luck Steve and Thanks.

Mixed feelings on the whole saga, although if he came back and picked off a few of our players.......

And he will because that's what he does.

I find myself agreeing with TGC and Edna! Not a contrary position as they're both saying much the same thing but Edna is a little bit more vengeful.

I'm now at the stage where I don't give a toss if it was poaching or not. At the end of the day he's left us for a better job without really a backward glance. Saturday was the pits, making us beg him to stay (that was certainly the view encouraged by the club) whilst all the time silently laughing at us.

I'm not going to hate him, at the end of the day he'll be remembered as the manager who led us to a 5-0 defeat at Palace, got us relegated and sold our best player. If he's happy with that as an epitaph then fine.

The three Whos:
Bobby Who?
Steve Who?
Doctor Who?

I can see Zesh Rehman ending up there, and maybe Cullip, but after the way Coppell's betrayed us I can't believe for one minute that he'd have the front to approach us for players.

No Falmer = 3rd division club. We couldn't tempt players here on the promise of a nice new stadium in a couple of years. We couldn't attract any more directors with cash as we have over the last few years. Wages would go down and I would imagine Coppell is on a fair wage which would take a big cut.

Maybe SC knows more about the finances of the club than us. Maybe no Falmer = Bankruptcy. I hope not!

He probably won't be out of a job per se but would have to take a large cut in both wages and playing budget with no prospect of it changing. Which would probably lead to bad results which could lead to the sack.

I though Dk offered a two year contract to Steve in the summer, but SC only wanted to sign for 1.

Good point. No one expects total loyalty, of course he has to look after himself and his family and go for a better job if there is one. However at least Taylor had the decency to resign at the end of a season as opposed to waiting for the right job and then shooting off and leaving us in the lurch.

We should have sacked him in the summer when he failed to keep us up.

Hey people - read my original post - I'm not expecting many people to agree with me. I've taken a dispassionate view on a passionate subject. I don't necessarily agree with what he has done but I can fully understand it. And take football out of it and see it as a garage mechanic or secretary or suchlike and most people would go for the better job every time.

But as it's football, it's seen as a slight against our passions and if it wasn't, football wouldn't be the passionate sport it is. As I say, I'm just getting old because I look at it logically rather than as a fan.

We also have to remember that he has:

1. Left us top of the division.
2. Brought in Leon Knight and Ben Roberts.
3. Given much needed confidence to certain players (e.g. Mayo, Butters)
4. Probably passed on some of his experience to Booker and the rest of the coaching staff.

As long as he doesn't be a **** and start nicking our players

But, as I said, he's given us some good stuff
