My old man's a (retired) vicar, the whole family except me are committed Christians, and they all thought it was excellent.

Have to admit, that I was moved by the whole thing. He went through all that shit for me? Then I spilt my coke on my lap.

I liked the way he made Satan to be this sexy woman, tempting, seductive, yet so blatantly dodgy. A different take on the devil for me. As were Gibson's mad kids chasing after Judas. Nice use of cinematography to emphasise a point. Good stuff all in all, but bloody gory. Still not converted though (much to old man's annoyance!)

When it was over I went to the music and played Dylan's Precious Angel ... which still resonates for me as I listened to it non-stop when I found God again in 1981. It came to me that Jesus died the worst kind of criminal's death .... even the Gestapo couldn't have metered out such torture.

"Sister, lemme tell you about a vision I saw.
You were drawing water for your husband, you were suffering under the law.
You were telling him about Buddha, you were telling him about Mohammed
in the same breath.
You never mentioned one time the Man who came and died a criminal's death."

Precious Angel is a great song, isn't it.

I'm not a Christian (could you guess?) but I love Dylan's 79 to 81 songs. I guess it's just the conviction behind the singing that makes it so good.

There was quite a lot of blubbing come from the direction of Mrs Glover, she thought it was very good.

Been a big Dylan fan since I was a teenager (long time ago) and agree that he had so much power and conviction in those songs. I have quite a few bootleg concert CDs from that time and his voice really belts out the songs - and that is said from a Dylan fan perspective rather than as a Christian!
The track "Slow Train Coming" is the most awesome brooding piece of music I have ever heard:

Two verses in particular:

"Sometimes I feel so low-down and disgusted
Can't help but wonder what's happenin' to my companions,
Are they lost or are they found, have they counted the cost it'll take to bring down
All their earthly principles they're gonna have to abandon?
There's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend.

People starving and thirsting, grain elevators are bursting
Oh, you know it costs more to store the food than it do to give it.
They say lose your inhibitions, follow your own ambitions,
They talk about a life of brotherly love, show me someone who knows how to live it.
There's a slow, slow train comin' up around the bend."

Have you got November the 10th 1981, at New Orleans? That's my favourite Dylan concert.

And the one in Toronto, in April 1980, is pretty good too.

I will need to check - off-hand I am unsure (got rather a lot!!). Just today I bought a line copy of Paramount Theatre 1980. Seattle 1980 is superb as are all the Fox Warfield concerts from 1979, 1980 and 1981. One of my other favourites is the Fox Warfield gig where he brings Michael Bloomfield on stage for Like a Rolling Stone (Nov 1980 from memory?).

Two superb bootleg CDs of that period are "Birds Nest in Your Hair" and "Between Saved and Shot" (out-takes)
