im up for a big debate today an what better subject that this!

the poll tax was more or less a fair system, everybody had to contrbute something ,which in my book is fair.

there could have been a few things that could have been done different .i didnt agree with students paying 20%.

but all in all a fair tax.

start the slating of me NOW!

It wasn't fair you lizard. The way it was calculated depended on how many windows your house had. What genius thought that spaznut suggestion up!?!

Lesson learnt don't live in a green house. 1) It's hot, 2) High Poll tax and 3) scum kids will through stones at you.

........is that okay pops?

Wrong ...

... He and millions of other working class then went and voted for Thatch and the rest they say is history.
And that history included the poll tax riots - led by people who'd voted Tory for the first time in their lives.

The housing riots will, of couse, be led by articulate young people in their late twenties, earning good money, but nowhere near enough to get a mortgage.

It's today's 16 year olds we've got to worry about.

The poll tax was a crap regressive tax whereby those earning barely above poverty would have to pay the same as millionaires. Now in my mind there is something inherently wrong in that.

its no different to Council tax now tose living in a studio flat are band A, and people living in most one bed flats are still band A

also at the the other end of the spectrum

people in band H (The highest) say there property is worth £500,000
Those people who live in 10 million pound mansions are still band H ,

Oh and LB nothing needs to be done as markets tend to re-align.
If only.

Maybe they would realign if the UK joined the Euro. The campaign against the Euro is, of course, a campaign led by home owning, Daily Mail reading folk with a vested interest in preventing market realignment.

Fair point - I wasn't saying that I thought Council Tax was a fair way either.

Our markets will not realign without intervention. It is currently pegged against the States for obivous reasons, but I think we should try to ditch them. I want an affordable motor!

My last post was aimed at your comments about 16 year olds.

As for the above, if the UK entered now it would drive things haywire as a change in Intrestrates effects UK consumption more as we have more money tied up in houses.

Thats why blair aint going in and Browns trying to damp things down by raising Stamp Duty and introducing fixed rate morgages.

The campaign agains the Euro is coming from all sections of this country. It tends to be leaders who are out of step, john Monks/unions leaders of the CBI and of course are beloved dear leader Blair.

Read a good book recently - The World We're In by Will Hutton.

Talks about how our economy is very similar to the US but this is actually in opposition to many British cultures and values which are closer to Europe.

Long story short: - Britain would be better of adopting a more European style of economy in various ways.

One of the main reasons behind it was that Thatcher thought high spending Labour authorities would have the highest poll tax levels, people would blame those authorities for the high tax and vote them out. This plan slightly backfired when everytone blamed the government instead.

I could never get my head round why local taxation can't also be based on levels of income - a sort of local income tax.

Well why not? - Anyone?

With you on that one, Highfields.

One interesting issue with the present government and "sleath" taxes is that they are essentially regressive taxes (unlike Income Tax) and hit traditional Labour voters on lower incomes the hardest.

I read The State were in.

It was corpratist pants. Hutton is a pro Euro nutter who is also a member of the Bilderburg group(www.spotlight.org).

We share culture and values with The US cos its are Bastard ofspring, we do not share the same culture values with europe.

Its called the Judean-Christian tradition Vs Cartisian Rationalism.

The latter leading to Hitler, Mussolini, Franco etc.

Did you vote for the European President or against?

58 years and the ****s have learnt nothing.:nono:

Better in what way? Higher Unemployment and lower Growth?

What style? Oh yes the discredited Corpratist policies he admires.

Don't get carried away, looney.

The fact that I agree with your (and Gordon Brown's) analysis of the importance of housing factors in the UK economy, doesn't mean I share the rest of the package.

East London needs a small, family friendly, football club that plays in the Football League. Until this season, I thought that could be Leyton Orient.

But if West Ham want to play that role, maybe it's time to wave goodbye to the clowns at Brisbane Road.
