Three Little Pigs 'too offensive'
By Sean Coughlan
BBC News, education

A story based on the Three Little Pigs has been turned down from a government agency's annual awards because the subject matter could offend Muslims. The digital book, re-telling the classic fairy tale, was rejected by judges who warned that "the use of pigs raises cultural issues".

Becta, the government's educational technology agency, is a leading partner in the annual schools award. The judges also attacked Three Little Cowboy Builders for offending builders. The book's creative director, Anne Curtis, said that the idea that including pigs in a story could be interpreted as racism was "like a slap in the face".

'Cultural issues'
The CD-Rom digital version of the traditional story of the three little pigs, called Three Little Cowboy Builders, is aimed at primary school children. But judges at this year's Bett Award said that they had "concerns about the Asian community and the use of pigs raises cultural issues". The Three Little Cowboy Builders has already been a prize winner at the recent Education Resource Award - but its Newcastle-based publishers, Shoo-fly were turned down by the Bett Award panel, run the government's technology agency.

The feedback from the judges explaining why they had rejected the CD-Rom highlighted that they "could not recommend this product to the Muslim community". They also warned that the story might "alienate parts of the workforce (building trade)". The judges criticised the stereotyping in the story of the unfortunate pigs: "Is it true that all builders are cowboys, builders get their work blown down, and builders are like pigs?"

Animal Farm?
Ms Curtis said that rather than preventing the spread of racism, such an attitude was likely to inflame ill-feeling. As another example, she says would that mean that secondary schools could not teach Animal Farm because it features pigs?

Her company is committed to an ethical approach to business and its products promote a message of mutual respect, she says - and banning such traditional stories will "close minds rather than open them". Becta, the government funded agency responsible for technology in schools and colleges, says that it is standing by the judges' verdict.

"Becta with its partners is responsible for the judging criteria against which the 70 independent judges, mostly practising teachers, comment. All the partners stick by the judging criteria," said a Becta spokesman. The reason that this product was not shortlisted was because "it failed to reach the required standard across a number of criteria", said the spokesman. Becta runs the awards with the Besa trade association and show organisers, Emap Education.

Merlin John, author of an educational technology website which highlighted the story, warns that such rulings can undermine the credibility of the awards. "When benchmarks are undermined by pedestrian and pedantic tick lists, and by inflexible, unhelpful processes, it can tarnish the achievements of even the most worthy winners. It's time for a rethink, and for Becta to listen to the criticisms that have been ignored for a number of years," said Mr John.

Nestling in green nowhere
"Little Pig, Little Pig, Let me come in.."

"Not By the hairs of my chinny chin chin"

"Then I'll huff and I'll puff like the Mujahadeen!!!!, then I will cut off your head in a video where I wag my finger at the viewer a lot whilst wearing a Balaclava, and this I will do in the cause of an all loving God..."

coat.

Blind middle class ignorance.

As y'may recall I live in Hackney in the middle of what is Europe's biggest and most concentrated muslim community, with such logic, our Turkish restaurants and Cafe's wouldn't have sausages and bacon on the menu and our City Farms wouldn't have our Staffordshire pigs.

Get real.

All rather silly really.

Just done a little bit of research on this. As far as I can tell the various monotheistic faiths (Judaism, Islam, and some Christian), are not allowed to eat swine because a couple of thousand years ago people used to regularly catch diseases from it, and somebody wrote about it in a couple of books. I don't think it says anywhere in those books that they should be offended by pigs as such, just that they shouldn't eat them.

So, no need to ban "The Three Little Pigs", piggy banks, or Pinky and Perky - they aren't offensive, just not on the menu.

funny thing is Jews dislike pigs too, but there hasnt been the issue in the past so why now? As Curious Orange says, the main issue is about eating pig anyway, they are not inherently offensive themselves. its not like muslim countries ban pork sausages and bacon from the tourists.

probably bollocks anyway.

Personally I think we should slaughter all pigs immediately I would hate a muslim person to see one at a farm or such and get offended by it.

I am suprised Al Queda have not commenced a terrorist campaign against English farmers who raise Pigs as CLEARLY it is incitement and persecution of Muslim and Islam and done to cause offence and incite violence against them. English Farmers - EVIL INFIDELS

Sūþseaxna
Now grease that pig
And sing praise
Go on out
And gas that dog
Trick on in
Honk that stink
Take it on down
And watch it grow
Play it low
And pick it up
Take it on in
In a plucking cup
Three-legged man
And a hot-lipped hoe
Tell 'em all
Montgomery says hello

Pink Floyd better watch out too.....

Big man, pig man, ha ha charade you are.
You well heeled big wheel, ha ha charade you are.
And when your hand is on your heart,
you're nearly a good laugh, almost a joker,
with your head down in the pig bin,
saying, " Keep on digging", pig stain on your fat chin.
What do you hope to find, when you're down in the pig mine?
You're nearly a laugh, you're nearly a laugh,
but you're really a cry.

oh god, the sun would have a field day on this story... what a joke

Well let me surprise you...

Have to give a thumbs up to that liberal politically correct bible of newsworthiness The Sun today which rightly pointed out that the vast majority muslims wouldn't give a stuff and it wouldn't be that community attempting to ban the stories.

Personally I find the story offensive to Muslims and Jews because it will put the seed in the head of the less enlightenened members of the community that the said religions have had something to do with the ban.

Just like the stupid individual who sent out a memo from my local council about the "Winter Lights" in Clapham High Street, these ideas tend to originate in the heads of non members of those communities.

I thought that was the Lib Dems? I certainly read about them not mentioning xmas in a card a few years back and simply having a message about how much the recipient of the card owed the council in arrears..

But then again, I'm rather biased against the South London Lib Dems:laugh:

Labour I think, but it was a single individual who got above their station.

The irony (if that's the right word to use) about any talk or attempt to ban the C word (I'm convinced that 99% of the stories are untrue) is that most the active Christians round here I see are VERY unwhite.

I also note that the Catholic Church has seen a rise in numbers for the first time in years, due to Polish immigrants.

The fact of the matter is that Christainity is on the rise in the UK, due mainly to immigration.

That's pretty much the last word on the subject isn't it :D
